Hi everyone,

I'm just wondering if I could get some advice on how to approach other photographers regarding being a second shooter for them to gain experience and a portfolio?
What are the best practices? Is it best to email? I don't know any others in the industry yet. Know my fair share of Fashion photographers in Leeds and about but that's the extent of it.

Any pointers would be muchly appreciated! TIA!

If you want advic from pro’s, it’s probably not the beginners section you need ;)

Hi Katey,

Your post seems to be about what you will gain Try couching it as what you have to offer

Exactly this. No photographer is going to train up someone who will become his rival. What can you offer the photographer, what experience do you have, what could you bring as an extra to the wedding as that extra photographer. You mention fashion photographers, do you have a portfolio from here you can show which would indicate you can pose and shoot people.

Whats in it for the photographer, whose reputation could be put at risk. As you likeable, well presented, would represent their business well. What would your fee be for a days work.
These sort of questions need to be thought about and addressed to promote yourself to the photographer. I sure others could think of more.

Where abouts are you?

I'm based in Leeds :)

Thanks for the input! I was a model in past life, and have coached other models on shoots with posing too- so there's that on my side! I wouldn't be looking for a fee, I'm looking for experience, and portfolio, rather than the paying work.

Playing devils advocate, so you can think about possible issues and prepare answers. Whats the portfolio for? So you can offer to shoot weddings also?
