after asking on another thread about laptops and using lightroom3.i think i'm going to go with a 13"or15"mac book pro. but as i will be using it as my main machine and for travelling with.has second monitor got to be a apple monitor :thinking:or could i hook it up to hd tv

You can use any monitor that has either a VGA, HDMI or DVI input. You just need to corresponding Apple mini display to correct input.

So if your TV has a HDMI you need a Apple mini display to HDMI cable. Like this http://www.lambda-tek.com/componentshop/index.pl?origin=gbase7.5&prodID=B273603

Not sure if it can carry audio though so you may need audio cables as well. But its simple either way.

HDMI(High-Definition Multimedia Interface) carries audio, too :)

I guess you're going to buy new monitor + laptop so I'm pretty sure they both will be equipped with HDMI ports.

not all HDMI outputs on a computer outputs sound.

personally i would not use a TV for photo work, an IPS panel would be much better (i know you can get IPS TV now but theyre usually high end).

but to answer the original question no it does not have to be an apple display, personally id look at matte over glossy for editing too.

I'd go with an IPS monitor like the Dell 2209WA - great value and a cracking monitor for photo work. On the HDMI sound thing, all the latest Macbook Pros from Mid 2010 [I think] output sound as well as video over the Mini Display Port

I use a BenQ 24" monitor coupled to my 15" Macbook pro.
No problems whatsoever once I got it properly colour calibrated. Takes a while to sort out but now I couldn't be without a second monitor.
