Yes
My pc is old, and could do with a very cheap lift until I can afford to replace it. It has an Asus P4P800-E motherboard, and I was wondering if anyone knows of a place that sells of old bits, like maybe a CPU or some memory that I could use.
Currently I have a 2.4 CPU - I can't remember any other details and am not home till tomorrow to check, and 1gb of memory.
Any ideas ?
What do you all do with your old pc's or components?

best bet's going to be ebay I'd suspect Steve

It's not worth buying second hand at all, unless you are 100% certain that what you are buying is in full working order, and is 100% compatible with the rest of your setup.

It'd be easy to pick up a Dual Core CPU, Motherboard (with integrated graphics, sound, lan etc.) and 1 or even 2Gb of memory for under £100 and the speed boost would be huge*!

Cheers,
James

*Unless you're a gamer, but I suspect with a setup like that, you aren't.

so if I were to replace the motherboard and cpu, just how easy is it to get everything running again ? I do have a big power supply, and a case, and all the other bits like soundcard and graphics card, so is it just a case of removing and replacing the bits, and then starting up again, or do I need to do scary stuff like re-installing windows, which I have never done..?
I do have my cd of XP plus service packs etc...
Also, what to look at ?

Hmmm, if you're not confident reinstalling Windows (which it is highy likely you will have to do) then PC building *may* not be for you.

I'd be happy to look out some exact bits and email over a list, but I'd need to know in detail what you have already to make sure it will work.

Failing that, if this seems like a big ol' faff, then there are some cracking deals on complete machines at the moment www.ebuyer.com is a great place to start but places selling top notch PC's which are perfect for Photo editing are too numerous to mention!

Cheers,
James

Reinstalling windows these days is very straight forward most of the time http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316941 There are many websites that take you through the process if you're not confident http://www.buildeasypc.com/, so you'll have no worries there. The only problem you may come across is that the components don't like eachother but again, this is not as much of a problem as it used to be. If you buy a motherboard/processor bundle and memory from a decent source you're unlikely to have major problems.

It is the cheapest way to keep up to date with your hardware and for something not difficult, just tedius, it's something that would be good to learn anyway.

I am not scared of doing it, just inexperienced..
I have built a pc from scratch, but reinstalling seems to have some sort of mystique about it..
Part of the problem I face is that I want to carry the components back in my hand luggage rather than a big box of luggage for the hold..
I'll take a look at the sites you (walls) mention and see if I can make sense of it all.
Moos3h - I'll let yo uknow what I have when home !
Thanks for the help guys

If you can boot from your cd drive, which if you buy a relative new motherboard you should be able to (change the settings in the bios - read the motherboard manual), pop the XP cd into the drive then reboot the newly built pc and it will enter the setup - fairly easy from there.
