Fungal spores exist in every breath of air you take. You absolutely cannot avoid them. If the camera bag smell musty, it will be because there are a lot of fungal spores in there but if you keep it cool and dry, they cannot grow in your lenses.
I have a couple bags that are at least 10 years old that have only been used as storage for a few years now, not a trace of any fungus in them. I do keep a bunch of silica gel packs in every bag I own though, at all times, in use in storage whatever. I believe these help a lot to keep any moisture/condensation down
I have bags dating back to a Tenba Pro Pak I purchased when they were first imported into the U.K. in the early 1980s. Whenever one gets grubby I throw it in the washing machine and let it air dry.
