Seasonal Challenge

Reading some of the feedback from other threads I have come up with a new challenge which will be more difficult to find excuses to dodge. I am sure that many of us have a spare camera that we don't mind tying up for a year. (potential excuse)

The challenge is

One camera.
One roll of film
One year to shoot the roll (approx)

Theme is "seasonal" ie, Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn.

The subject can be anything that conveys to you that particular season of the year.

Entrants to post their chosen camera and film roll before the end of January this year.

Five images to be submitted before the end of this year, 31/12.2026

One from each "Season" and your overall favorite from the year.

The recent crap camera (fixed focus / aperture / shutter speed etc...) challenge went generally along the same lines, in that we spent the year making images and then showed a few at the year end. I enjoyed this and my GAS had a wonderful time, acquiring many, almost disposable, plastic cameras. Maybe the challenge didn't get enough entrants to justify running it again.

I did think of photographing the same scene/view in different seasons and showing them as a set, this challenge would allow me to do that and the use of a super simple camera (not one that gets regular use) would suit it (for me).

Entrants are likely to enter their favourite image as one of the four, so would that be a problem?

Not at all Dave,

I have my eye's peeled for a £1.16 camera with lens that I can sell on next year as tested. :)

I'd like to suggest that the deadline for declaring the camera and film used is extended to the end of Feb. It's still winter and allows time to find/buy/test a camera.

Good Idea Dave.

Rather than buy another camera, I already have two new ones on the way, I have brought an F801 out of retirement for the challenge, a spare 50mm 1.8 D lens and a Roll of Kentmere 200.

I honestly can't see this getting much traction. I've used cheap cameras for donkey's years and sometimes entered club competitions with the results. But they were open competitions with no restrictions on equipment used. I'd be surprised if there were 6 members still using film in point and shoot cameras. As for the comment about the competition being difficult to dodge; that is rather presumptuous. There are thousands of members on here, hundreds active and yet there are few that participate in competitions. I only enter if I happen to have something on file. I don't go out of my way to take a shot to compete. Most people are not bothered about competing and even less prepared to jump through hoops because some one person thinks that it is a good idea. I won't find it difficult to dodge. Its dead easy.

I'm all for a new filmic challenge, I think the possible sticking point might be having to keep the film going through 4 seasons, but as has been said before, many times it takes months to finish a film. Most F&C'ers have a multitude, or at least a small collection, of cameras so keeping one tied up for a year shouldn't be a problem. If a new one is to be obtained, there are plenty knocking about. I have a Chroma Cube that has had the same HP5 film in it for 3 years now - I find it hard to take many pinhole shots, but slowly and surely it is being used up.

However, the F&C cohort is a relatively small one so there may not be a lot of takers for this; but hopefully at least a few will do so.

I'm up for it. Do you want declarations of camera/film combos in this thread or a new one?

I don't believe that the OP made any restrictions on camera type. The mention of P&S cameras was from me, about a previous comp.

I will play in this challenge. Although I very rarely shoot colour film now, I decided I wanted color to portray autumn in particular, so I took the plunge and ordered one roll of Kodak Gold in 35mm. It might be the only roll of colour film I'll shoot this year. After having paid £15 including postage, and with the cost of developing still to come, I'll be eating beans on toast for the rest of the year;)

The camera will be the cheap-as-chips Centon K100.

The use of colour would be a great choice for depicting the changing colours through the season, but it doesn't appear to be cheap, so it's home developed mono for me.
I'll need something with good focus ability rather than one of my P&S cams.
My recently bought Minolta Dynax 404si will get used, Super cheap but quite capable and I won't need it for anything else, having been relegated to the bottom drawer by a Dynax 5, which in turn was superseded by a Dynax 505si.
I'll use Fomapan 400.

I've got loads of different slow and very slow 35mm films in the freezer, but I'd prefer to do colour too. I'm trying to decide between 35mm and 120 though - need to look through my camera drawers first to see what I can set aside.

As per Dave's suggestion the camera and film choice is open until the end of February, nothing is set in stone so feel free to make changes to equipment etc until that date. Kevin's point regarding Autumn colour is a good one.
Lindsay, do you think the film might not last, degradation wise.

The challenge is about inclusivity and encouraging folk to go out and shoot a roll, nothing more.

All ideas and suggestions are very welcome.

The film is fine, despite being probably a couple of years expired now; I keep most film in sa freezer and pull out small quantities to keep in the fridge periodically, and then give it a day to acclimatise before loading. So long as it's not kept on a radiator, it'll surely be fine. Anyway, the slow ones are all B&W so it'll probably be Kodak Ektar 100 or Gold 200 actually. I need to decide on the camera first - likely an old Pentax SLR.

I've dug out a Zeiss Ikon Nettar 517 with the f4.5 75mm lens and Prontor-SV shutter, 6x6 on 120, to use for this. I'll be using Portra 400 in it, as the lens isn't very fast.

After Kevin's comments regarding Autumn colours I have had a change of heart and put a roll of GT24 retro into an N90s.

After two weeks of covid I am raring to go. :)

It so refreshing to be able to think straight once again.

Is it too late?

I might have a spare camera I could use for this.

A Minolta SRT101 with a broken light meter. I'd have to order some film, but like others have said, it would be good to do this in colour.
