SDHC Cards - Recommendation?

Hi,

I have a Canon 550d, i have a class 6 4gb card from loaning from another camera to get me going.. but according to screen can only take 100 pics (raw&jpg)

Has anyone used these or know anything about them?..

In a ideal world i would just stick to sandisk extreme class 10 cards, but at the moment not possible (£££'s)

Dont really want to get anything from the the fleebay, and it turn out no good.

I've also been on the hunt for some SDHC cards, after reading a lot of reviews it appears that although the cheaper cards have 'Class 10' written on them, when properly tested they were only coming out at Class 4-6 speeds.
I was shooting with a 16Gb Class 4 Transcend card yesterday on my brothers EOS 550D and had well over 400 RAW files on board. Only time I had any problems with Class 4 is when I was burst shooting and when filming. The bursts were up to 6 or 7 RAW stills and the Video was a total of 9 seconds before the card decided it had 'had enough'
I'm sure that plenty of people will tell you on here, with storage, you really do get what you pay for. Sometimes you get lucky with cheap 'eBay' cards, but most of the time its worth paying that little bit extra for a proper brand name.
I have been recommended Transcend, SanDisk and Kingston cards to be some of the better brands that are about :D

Maybe consider shooting RAW only. Unless you find yourself regularly having to give people (friends/family/clients) quick copies of your photos, I don't see the point in RAW+JPEG.

I used to think like that and still do really, but someone on one of the forums made the point that if you have one large card which stays in the camera it is less likely to get lost.

OTOH, if your large card fails...:'(
 
What about Lexar Professional 133x SDHC class 10 cards (around £17 for 8gb ones) :shrug:

I use Lexar Professional 400x 8gb & 300x 4gb UDMA CF cards & have had no problems..... Also I've used the Lexar Professional 8gb 133x ones in the past as well also had no problems...
 
The only card I have tried that has failed to work in my 1D was a Kingston 16GB
 
yet my 2 Kingston Cards have performed well for 2 years

always formatted before each shoot

luck of the draw i guess as statistically there will be 'some' failures in every brand
 
I'm having good results using my duracell 200x 16gb card from 7dayshop. It's great in my 550D
 
I've used Play.com cards for a while, never had any problems. I think I've bought at least 3 this year, all 16gb.
 
Get a 7dayshop or play.com class 10. They appear to be actually class 10 and quite reliable.

Think i will give them a try then, and keep the sandisk with me for a few shots, just in case..

Get Sandisk. Get two smaller cards. It just makes sense.

Any card from any make has the potential to fail. Sandisk have their reputation for a good reason, so I personally would not even bother trying anyone else until their reputation is superseded.

16GB cards and larger are a bad idea if your photos are in any way crucial. Regardless of the chance of failure, losing the card is not the only thing that can happen in order for you to lose all your information, which people seem to forget in these (regular) debates. So my advice is, get two smaller cards of the best reputable make you can afford.
 
I use Sandisk and Transcend (mostly Transcend) and had no problems with either or them. I would only buy Transcend from now though as they are really cheap and proven to be reliable for me.

Will now wait for the barage of these are fake/crap etc, but for the money I ordered 2. I also find fast cards pretty pointless, its the camera buffer that is the issue, once thats full the faster card in the world will only allow you to start shooting again marginally quicker.

Look carefully at your camera settings - on Nikon setting active D lighting on dramatically reduces the number of shots before buffer is full, think also about the max file size and quality you need both can free up more frames before lock up
 
Its your dosh - you spend it on & how you like.... If they do the job an last then its a good buy. If they dont then you haven't exactley broke the bank have you....

yes always pay the most you possibly can for branded stuff because you are scared you may lose your photos. I have only used cheap cards and never had one fail, thats my choice, you are welcome to pay premium price for something that probably comes from the same factory!!!

At £8.50 that is almost certainly fake or a con or both. Have you seen the prices for other listings of the same card on eBay?

No, not exactly. Based on thirty odd years in engineering, predominently electronics, I know first hand that making a more reliable product costs more. You may not necessarily get what you pay for, but you very seldom get more.

tell you what I'll let you know hwat they are like when they arrive, if they are crap I will say so!

Yes I can "smell the coffee" and have seen the price of 32gb cards elswhere, but come on chaps at £8.50 they are worth a punt.

:thinking: They have only been a member a month or so this year - then again Daves still protected by paypal, as until he leaves FB for the item the seller doesn't get paid....
 
ha ha well if they do arrive we shall see what they are like, 95 other "mugs" have ordered them. Will post back the outcome whatever, but as Trig says I do have paypal protection and there's no point in the seller trying a scam as he wont get his money anyway. They are quoting up to 3 weeks delivery which does sound a bit iffy.
 
The listing has been removed ... we all know what tha means.

Just had 2 of their class 10 32GB cards die on me this week, both less than 5 weeks old so would recommend avoiding those.

Edit: the 7 Day Shop ones.
