My old Kingston multi card reader has started playing up and it took me ages to get the pictures off my sd card earlier. What are people’s recommendations for a decent card reader please?

I use something like THIS. Fast enough for me and means I don't need to find the adaptor when I'm downloading from a Micro SD card.

Something like that should be fine, with stuff like that though I am always a little dubious about if you are getting the advertised speed, it's why I like to stick to well known brands, also in this case the price difference isn't much.

This is one of those things I don't see the point of spending much money on, I got a basic SD card reader off of Amazon for about £5 a few years ago and it hasn't let me down yet.

If your computer supports usb c, SD card readers are cheap and faster.

Be aware you want USB3 with blue plastic inside (and use usb3 port)
TBH for photos its not that important but if you do any video in 4k if not usb3 downloading will take MUCH longer.

I bought this Kingston one in 2022 to get the USB 3 read transfer speeds I wanted.

FWIW I also have another dual card reader by ProGrade......why, well I have progressively added to my cards more Prograde cards and their reader combined with their software allows for firmware updating as needed and SD health checks, again as needed.

But the aforementioned Kingston is the one I reach for to do simple card copying to my PC.

IF it's taking a while to do the job, I leave it to get on with it while I do something else.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I’ve just got to decide what to buy now.

I’ve used a Lexar Professional card reader since 2016. No issues at all. No longer available but I would buy their latest model if required. However they are not complex so if you keep to known brands you should be fine.

I've bought several USB card readers and the nicest one so far has been this double sided UGREEN branded unit from Amazon...

...it has USB-A and USB-C plugs as well as slots for both standard and mini SD cards. It seems better made than my other readers and even has a tether hole, if you want to hang it round your neck!

Yeah in my experience UGREEN products are great.

I’ve gone with a U GREEN card reader. Thanks for all your help.
