Just bought a Canon G15 compact. I've got a problem with the SD card. On my
desktop PC(Windows XP) card reader I get a message; You need to format the disk before it can be used. When I try it on my Samsung laptop(Windows 7)
exactly the same message. When I tried the card yesterday on a friends dell pc it it was recognized no problem. The CF card for my SLR camera works no problem. I installed the canon software disk. but no luck. Any ideas.

You need to find which exact card reader you have an update the software/firmware/drivers for it.

Does the card have pictures on it ? If so and you want to keep them get your friend with the Dell to download them for you.
You could then try formatting the card in the camera and taking a few test shots and attempt to download them.
If that fails try formatting the card in your pc.

Not had your specific problem, but I have had a card that was not recognised on a Luxor reader linked to a W7 pc but was recognised in the same reader linked to an XP pc. Strangely, the same card was recognised by both PC's when a Kingston reader was used.

It was a two SD card pack I bought with the camera. I shot a couple of frames
on the unused card and then formatted it in the camera but no luck with that.
My desktop PC has built in card slots and no problem with my CF card.

I am scratching my head. Perhaps Omens suggestion is the answer.

I have never installed any software with card readers (all have been USB coupled), but just let Windows find drivers.
Be interesting to see what happens if you could attach an external reader and try the card in that. If that worked it would appear to suggest that your internal reader has a problem (or a problem with that card).

Have you tried (with the Problem card) connecting your Camera directly to your PC??

I have connected the camera directly to PC/ laptop via usb and was able to upload the images with the Canon software and then copying them to My Pictures. I use PhotoShop CS3 for editing so I'm not really interested in this
Canon software. I'd still love to be able to just use the SD card like I use my SLR
CF card.

Does the other card from the 2 pack work in the computer? If so, I would say it's a card problem. If not, it's possible that the reader's an SD reader and the cards are SDHC (some readers can't read SDHC cards).

Hi Nod, thats the problem. I've just borrowed a older SD card took a few shots on the G15 and the SD card slot on my 8 year old computer recognized it no problem. The same with the 6 year old card reader no problem. Perhaps I should have said SDHC card from the beginning, apologies for that. Thanks all for your replies.

No problem. I found out the hard way that my nice, big, fast SDHC cards aren't recognised by my little (old) Canon Selphy printer that I take on holiday to print postcards! Luckily I managed to find some smaller SD cards (in Boots) so I use them when on holiday since they hold plenty of pics for a day's shooting and I can print straight from the card before transferring the shots to a netbook. I also invested a few quid in a new USB card reader so I could upload to my old desktop (you guessed it, my old card reader didn't like SDHC...)
