scratched the top lcd on the camera (badly)

Hi, I scratched up the top lcd on my screen pretty badly, lots of fine little scratches and now I can't really read the display underneath (the number of remaining shots)

i'm willing to take a chance to fix it with some sort of polishing compound, so does anyone have any tips?

Alternatively, is it a replaceable part?
 
Polywatch (polish for scratched watch faces - about £6), cotton wool and some elbow grease should sort it.
 
I've used BRASSO to remove minor scratches from a few things including a mobile phone.
 
Fine wet and dry paper (1000 and/or 1500 depending on the severity), carefully polish out the scratches until you have a matt finish, then use t-cut until all is well again.

Alternaively, assuming it's the same as a Nikon, then it's a dirt cheap part and dead easy to replace :D

i do have some brasso, but not any polywatch- so probaly just use that, don't really want to spend any money as i'd rather just put the cash towards a new part

Brassica isn't corse enough. Get a proper plastic polish as mentioned above. You'll be there all day with the brasso.
 
A new top screen is probably going to cost less than a tin of Brasso.

Get in contact with Canon for the replacement part, I understand it's very easy to replace yourself.
 
If going down the polishing route, i would suggest yet and dry and PlastX from Halfrauds :-)
 
I smashed the top screen on my old D200.
It simply lifted out with the help of blade and the new one just sticks back in with double sided tape.
Cant say for sure its the same on yours, but if it is, its got to be easier than buying polishing compunds and spending ages trying to polish it out.

If this is the case a new one would be best of course. Though I managed to polish out a nasty, deep scratch with Polywatch in ten minutes.
