Scratch Discs full

Which drive have you got set as the scratch drive?

Check that drive.... How much space is on it?

If it is the main drive then I would suggest you do a big clear out or buy a much larger drive.

Tell me, do I need all the adobe caches? They take up a lorra lorra room on my Mac

I would say so. Caches do tend to speed up the machine. What size hard drive do you have?

4GB, could that be right? I clicked on the 'about this mac' on the apple in the top corner - is there any way to increase this? Im forever deleting stuff, but Ive got to a point now where I feel I need everything that's on there!

Also, can't seem to find where I have the scratch disc set to?

4Gb will be the memory size ie RAM

If you are running MacOS then click on the icon for your hard drive and then hold [CMD] and press

This will show you how much is used and from how much look for CAPACITY and AVAILABLE......

doh! thought that seemed rather teeny! :o

74.21GB capacity with only 19.5MB available.... hmmm that'd be why then!

Oh I dont know what to delete, why there's so much rubbish on there, Im sure I use it all!

So if I find something to delete - like some unwanted pics from the shoot Im editing at the mo, will it clear up some space for the scratch discs too?

Look in my top tips there are a number of things you can get rid of....

Firstly go to:

HARD DRIVE :: Library :: Printers

You will find lots of folders relating to Brother, Canon, Epson, HP etc etc.... Delete ALL of these that relate to printers you do not have.

Now empty the trash bin

Now install Delocaliser and remove all the language files that you do not use.

That should save you a few Gb.....

I deleted a few pics, and can save my pic, so that's something - thanks for your help - I think I desperately need a good clean up. How on earth do you know what to delete? If I take it to the Mac shop, do you think they'd help me?

They will certainly charge you!

What machine do you have?

WOW! The printer stuff alone cleared 3GB - fantastic, thanks! Will do the other tomorrow - must go to bed now.

I have Applecare... would they still charge me do you reckon?

Thank you thank you thank you!

I don't know :nono: how much work do you think it was doing all those tips and you haven'y read them ;)

If you take your machine in to an Apple store and get an apple expert appointment then yes they will help you clear a few things that you may not need but they are all APPLE employees and tow the party line so the above examples would not be given just for starters....

An 80Gb HD is really rather small. If you have a macbook for example you can buy a 320Gb HD and an external case for £60. Put the HD in the case and copy your current HD onto it then swap them round. Your machine should fire up with 200Gb+ of free space. Once you have done that you can reformat the now external 80Gb HD and use it as backup. If you can change a fuse then changing the HD is not much harder..... 4 screws :) I'll talk you through it..... If you have a mac mini, iMac or macbook pro then I would suggest someone who is a bit more technical.

A small 70gb HD and the file size of a Canon 50D is always going to be a recipe for space problems.

You can get a My Book 1Terrabite (1000GB) external HD for about £65 for storing your images on which would solve all your problems. :)

Thank you - I did read cowasaki - I just had a v.early start this morning and knew I needed to go to bed - you have been more than helpful, thank you!

I have a Macbook - and I do have an external HD - a 250GB Elements Pro, which I put all my shoots onto.

Im really not good at the tecchy stuff! I feel like everything that's on my computer now is stuff I need and use! I dont have any pics other than the ones Im working on atm, and I dont store much else (I dont think) I have a few actions and brushes but they dont take up much room.

I dont really understand tbh... if I use the stuff on my Macbook then don't I need it? But surely it can't be using ALL that memory?!

Sorry - Im crap!

You could probably do with changing the hard drive that is inside your computer for a hard drive with a larger capacity. You can buy a 320Gb one for about £50 at the moment. If you were nearby I would offer to do it for you as it is only an hours work. There must be an Apple repairer nearby that can swap the drive for you and I have given step by step instructions previously.

Basically you need to buy an external case like this one:

944403-a.jpg

This is £5.19 from www.scan.co.uk part number LN25907

Plus a hard drive like this one:

864860-a.jpg

This is £51.24 from the same location part number LN24171

and it is a 320Gb 7200rpm hard drive which will also speed up your computer.

  • Right you undo a few screws on the external case and put 2 cables into the drive then fit it into the case and screw it together.
  • Start your macbook and connect the next external drive
  • Download CARBON COPY CLONER from HERE
  • Install and run CARBON COPY CLONER
  • CLONE your small 80Gb hard drive onto the 320Gb hard drive.
  • Now shutdown your computer.
  • Disassemble the external drive.
  • Inside of the battery compartment you can see several screws shown below in the photograph, these screws are attached to an L shaped bracket which retains the memory and hard drive. Undo these screws.
  • Remove the L shaped bracket by pulling from the edge nearest the computer edge first.
  • Now that the L bracket is removed to the left side of the bay you will see a flap of material, this is attached to the hard drive and pulling it will dis-connect the drive. The drive will then slide out.
  • Attach a flap of material to your new drive just like that which you can see attached to the old drive. (If you fail to do this step then you will have difficulty removing the drive again once it is in place!). Now slot the drive back into the computer.
  • Re-install the L bracket into its position and re-tighten the screws.
  • Replace the battery and switch on.
  • Your computer will boot up JUST LIKE IT DID BEFORE but you will now have a 320Gb hard drive rather than the 80Gb so you should have 240Gb ish more than you had before.
  • You can then install your old 80Gb hard drive into the new enclosure and use than as another external backup maybe a second picture backup!
Job done..........

There are companies that will do this for you but not sure what they charge but if you take your time it really is not that difficult.

Eeek - that looks super scary! But would be SO worth it in the end. Do you think its realistic for me to do it myself? I'd be so scared of doing something wrong!

Thanks so much for typing all that out for me.

Do you have faith in me!?

If you take your time and work on a table and you are careful you shouldn't have any problems at all.

I was going to do something along these lines when I had my old 80GB PC, but the guy in the PC shop said that the existing motherboard wouldn't handle it.
