I am thinking of spending a week in the Highlands next May, I have been looking around for accommodation and think I will be basing myself in The Muir of Ord area, can anybody recommend any areas within an hour or so drive away that are good for wildlife.

Chanonry Point on the Black Isle - excellent for spotting dolphins from the beach - about 15 miles from Muir of Ord

Loch Garten famous for the ospreys but other things too - red squirrel, crossbill, crested tit; about 40 miles

Also have a look towards the west coast. From Muir to Gairloch is about 60 miles, so a little more than an hour but there are some good boat trips from there. Went on one in early October and although the weather wasn't great we saw kittiwake, great skua, artic skua, porpoise, minke whale, white tailed eagle, golden eagle.
