Can anybody tell me what this does?

Once again i have looked at the manual but cant see nor figure out what this does or how it works.

And if anybody out there does know is it any good?

i'm presuming it'll figure out what type of scene you're shooting and adjust settings accordingly, like aperture and shutter speed for portraits vs landscape vs sport

based on either colour/contrast and movement

this is all speculation though :)

It is part of the 'matrix, metering system the camera uses to set the correct exposure, it has 1000's of 'typical' scenes stored in its memory and uses those parameters to get everything fine and dandy for you.

Not something to worry about, its all part of the on-board computer, it just does its job, pretty well I may add.
