I not long since developed a 35mm HP5 at college and scanned the negs at home, after minimal manipulation (negative, contrast, levels and some noise reductions) Heres one of my favourites:

I took it last month on a rather wet and windy day from out of the car window (keeping dry and warm of course but window down for the shot) The road was flooded and running really fast like a river. I was pleased with the effect of the accidental dust and fibres picked up by the scanner they seem to give a very aged feeling. Looking forward to getting it onto a proper enlarger and making a true print.

I wonder if anyone has some experience scanning negs what settings/techniques they use, the scanner i used is quite old and might not be up to the job i wanted. But i used 1500px and told it the source was a glossy photo with a sheet of white A4 paper to reflect the light back through the negs.

The problem is that the scanner light was still coming from the wrong side, it's scanning the surface of the negative rather than the light coming through it. You'll never get good results unless you use a scanner that is set up to scan negatives, no matter how hard you try.

Hi Steep, and thanks for your reply. Could you or anyone else suggest any good (cheapish) models that will scan a neg properly aswell as function as a regular flatbed for normal scanning?

Have a look at the Epson Perfection 1250 Reg.

Make sure you get the accessory neg scanner with it as it isn't often bundled as a complete unit. It wont scan at the huge resolutions of a dedicated neg ascanner, but it does a pretty good job.

If money is a concern, have a look on the reviews forum for my review of the Genius HR8, it's cheap and cheerful and does the job nicely.

Thanks for the replys folks, I had a quick look at the review and it was useful, alas there were none available on the well known auction site ;)

Doing a quick search for "Epson Perfection" brought a few models so I settled for a new (always try to buy new if i can) Epson Perfection 1670 @ £50 including postage. Hopefully it will arrive soon and I can begin learning to use it so i'll be able to add my Bolton Abbey shots on here too :)

For anyone interested in looking heres the link to Steeps Genius HR8 Review

Thanks again :D :thankyou:

That's a very good price there!

Heh, I think price was a bit of an issue Arkady, in my case I wanted to scan medium format negs as well as 35mil but no way could I afford two grand for one of those!

Yeah price was an issue, i wanted to get something that would do the job amiably without costing the earth. I've got the new scanner and a better scan of my negative to show now:

Heres another from the same day:

All in all not a bad little scanner for £50 little slow but it gets there in the end.
