It can indeed - various bits of software to do that...
Most photo-shops use digital printers now - even if the actual print is produced by a 'wet' process, like on the old Fuji Frontier, the image is still scanned digitally at the same time.

I might look into having a go at that mum and dad have loads of negatives of photos that they no longer have.

The Epson perfection V500 will do all your negatives both colour and b&w and it will do your prints as well.

I am slightly biased as I went on a training day at Epson in Hemel Hempstead. I would have loved a V700 but they are pro series and very expensive.

There are many other manufacturers to choose from but you have to be carefull that they do scan old roll and 1/4 plate films as well.
