Scanner problem

Can other applications see your scanner as it sounds as if the drivers are not loaded?

Hi Graham, thanks for the reply. About 2mths ago i had to close my user account ( in my name ) and start operating the Administraters a/c just so i could access Adobe CS3 & Lightroom. Since i started using the Administrators a/c, i've had to do all sorts of trickery to get my PC to run properly. The mouse won't work on the old " Des user " a/c, and most of the desktop icon shortcuts have dissapeared. In short i think a bug has got into the system somehow, but scans reveal nothing. I've got AVG, Spybot & spyware doc.

This does sound that it is about time for an OS reinstall then, Backup all your data, format the drive and start again.

Sorry :(

What OS are you running?

I have vista and run in a limited account normally so that things aren't inadvertantly run with admin rights.. If something requires admin rights I just supply an admin password when prompted or right click and run as administrator.

Which icons have dissapeared? Is it simply that because you are in the admin profile your original user profile icons are not there which is to be expected. Or do you have desktop cleanup wizard set to run?

What make of scanner is it.. how does it connect to the computer? USB, Parralel, SCSI?
Can you see it in the camera and scanner wizard.
Does it appear in device manager

Is this the only symptoms to suggest a virus?

Formatting your machine is not the answer at this stage with the minimal information provided.

Start > Control panel > System > hardware > Device Manager

The yellow question mark is indicating that you do not have the driver installed for that device. If you right click on then question mark a menu will come up with the option to update driver. Ensure that the driver cd, which came with the scanner, is in your cd drive and then follow the prompts given by the update driver option above.

Sorry, i've followed all your instructions to the letter, and i manage to get to a 98% installation and then FREEZE. I'm convinced my computer started going haywire when i purchased a peice of software called REGCURE. For me the problems just multiplied from there.I tried to go back to System Restore but it wouldn't have it , and since then i've been combatting problem after problem. A new computer is on the books i think........no i know! Strange how some things work great though. Thanks for all your help,i mean it !!

That unfortunately is not sounding too clever - I tend to find that you clear 1 issue and that a 2nd issue kicks in, you clear that and a 3rd kicks in etc.

At present I would suggest to go to the scanners manufacturers website and download the latest drivers for your scanner and try installing that. You have nothing to loose by doing this and it is good policy to always use the latest drivers.

As for going from 1 problem to another - If you have your windows cd and all required application cd you have the option of wiping the hard drive and re-installing Windows and all applications that way you are going to working from a sound foundation. The motherboard drivers which you will also need can be downloaded from the motherboard's manufacturers website.

Another option, which you have already mentioned, is replace the pc - this is actually overkill for what your problem is - but it could considered a good time to go for a faster pc.

If you decide on either of the last 2 options, post back as you are going to have to get your data files & images off the pc to put back onto either of these 2 options.

It may be that the Power Management on the Root Hub is set to turn off USB devices to save power.
Try going into the Device Manager again and at the bottom of the list you should be able to see possibly 4 USB root hubs.
Right click on the first one and select properties, this will open up the USB Root Hub Properties window. Click on the power management tab and see if there is a tick in the 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.' option. If there is, just untick it and OK this. Do this to all the USB Root Hubs.
When the computer is turned off it will hopefully not disable your USB scanner and hopefully this will resolve your problem.

There was 5 root hubs and i unticked every one of them but no joy. Think i'll try the local computer shop and let him have a go. Many thanks guys for all your help. By the way i tried uninstalling /reinstalling using the original disc it wouldn't let me install the driver (20% only) then nothing. I contacted the visioneer website to see which scanner i had There's loads of 'em so i didn't know which driver to download. This ruddy scanner has no model name on it ,the only thing i could find was FU 661E underneath. No use.

Good advice in this post so far..

It might be worth running a system file checker on windows..

Click start then run and type in the following
sfc /scannow

This will scan for any corrupt missing system files and replace them (from your windows disk) if required.

I purchased software called Driver Detective about 8-10 mths ago, but only used it about 2/3 times. What this does is analyse your computer and identify which software has an updated driver ready for installing. It could find NO driver for my scanner and advised me to send an email to them and explain. I did this, telling them that the only model number i had was FU661E. within minuets they had sent me a link to the precise driver for my scanner. I downloaded this only to find that it would not install:bang:. I decided to shut the computer down and have a drink before bed. When i tried to shut it down, a message came on screen " installing updates for your computer, please do not unplug or close your computer down it will be done automatically" This went on all night and thru the morning until this afternoon. When i got back on it i decided to give the scanner driver another chance, an lo and behold IT WORKED !!!, not only that worked but also my windows media player now works and other things which i'm finding as i go along. I thought you all ought to know this because of the help which you had given me freely.....CHEERS:woot::woot::woot::woot:

That's great!.. the computer fairies fixed it :D
