Just had a call from an 01587 code (several over the past few days) and apparently it is a well known scam number. I just let it go to answerphone and the caller hung up. If you do answer it, the caller will tell you to press certain buttons on the keypad, so this is just a heads up.

I've had so many scam calls that I don't answer my phone unless I recognise the number. If someone wants to contact me, they can text me, leave a voicemail, or email me. I will get back to them. I will google any numbers that call me and add them to the block list if they're scam callers.

I get a fair number of 'odd' calls like that (recently from Leicester). My approach to allow the call to connect but not speak - usually if it's a 'real' person at the other end they will start speaking, asking if someone's there, but if it's a scam/automated PPI etc then they hang up within a couple of seconds of silence.

I used to get a lot of these too. It's called 'number spoofing' and it's very annoying.

Some of the calls I've received, were from my own local area code, but when I answered, sure enough, I heard the familiar, 'long-distance-sounding', thick Indian accent!

I eventually purchased a phone with a call screening/number blocking facility....and I'm happy that I now no longer have any scam calls.

As Gareth says about spoofing, it is nearly always used these days, i.e. the call isn't coming from the number you see on the phone. Scammers got wise to the machines blocking hidden or unknown/international numbers, this is their way round it.

We went for BT CLI and Call Minder a while back and it has been a boon................the settings mean that once you have identified the last number calling as spam/scam etc you can get it 'sent' to a junk voicemail box :)

RE: spoofing ~ sometimes when I get the time I call any apparent UK numbers back but I preceed it with 141 this means your number does not appear on CLI systems................the last one I checked this way came back as "we don't recognise that number....." so quite likely a spoofed number???

We are fed up of these calls, had about five today already. We get a lot every week, we don't answer the phone anymore. We only answer numbers we know.

The TPS does not work. Still get sales calls all the time, no longer answer the phone. They may get fed up ringing us, one day hopefully.

I wouldn't count on it I'm afraid, couple of years ago I used to get 30 or 40 calls a week for well over a year!!! That isn't an exaggeration!
It was the old 'Microsoft technical support' scam, and it got so bad I switched all the phones (ringers) off, and just hoped important people left messages!

You're right, TPS is useless, especially with spoofed numbers....the (spoofed) number they're calling from is usually a genuine number.
I read an account from a person in USA, who received a scam call, and it was their OWN number being spoofed!!

Word of warning: although it's tempting to wind up the scammers by playing dumb to waste their time etc....I think it may in fact bump you up the 'suckers list' !
I did this once....thought it was funny at the time, I had the guy on the phone for twenty minutes (doing my best biddy act lol!), eventually he got so frustrated, he called me an effing idiot and hung up!
Well, the call frequency increased dramatically....ten a day or more!

The only thing that really worked for me is the BT call blocking phone I bought.
It's a bit annoying for new genuine callers, because they have to announce who is calling before my phone rings....naturally the scammers never do this, so hey presto!....no more scammers!

I have now turned the volume down on the phones, at least they are not ringing constantly loudly. Anything important, then people will send a message. I always check who has rang, and any known numbers get a call back from me. Cold callers to the door, are doing my head in at the moment. Things are getting worse.

I completely understand your frustration John, I know how angering it is!
I hope they do indeed get bored and move on.

Our village booklet has just printed a warning of imminent, tenacious cold callers....and I live in a 'No Cold Calling' zone!
Several residents have had cold callers, to whom they've explained that it's a no cold calling zone, to which they responded with an apology, and simply walked next door and repeated the whole procedure....the utter b*****ds!!!
I haven't had any yet, but I've prepared my 'dressing down' speech.... something I can't really detail here! ;)

Just don't let them get a word in, start dragging them in...

"I don't get many people to talk to...
Come on in, can I talk to you about jesus - have you put much thought into the way you are living your life - are you prepared to be saved. Come we can pray for you over the next 3 hours
Brilliant - what are your thoughts on cycists, especially the lycra clad road terrorists that get in everyones way. Don't start me on horse riders.blocking roads, letting the animals defecate everywhere, expecting us to slow down or wait for their slow, unpredictable antics. They shouldn't be on the roads either...
Do you like photography? Now the interesting thing about this camera is the type of small screw they had to put into the base, only made in a small engineering shop in a small village in the Ukraine. The thread is quite unique, let me find my jewellers screwdriver and show you one..."

"Oh going so soon?"

This is what I do. It seems to keep the numbers of calls down.

Once told an ambulance chaser that I'd died in the accident....got cut off and they've not called me back since. Caused hilarity in the office. Mind you on reflection we've had family/relatives/friends who've been killed in accidents so it was a bit too close for comfort. But next time I will try something more outrageous.

Some of the newest ones are computers. You can tell by the delay in their responses to what you say.

One clear, fast way of getting rid of them:

"you are a computer, aren't you"

Call blocker phone every time, I've had one for years, only people I know get through, everyone else has
to say who they are, it doesn't show many scam calls these days:D
TBH I would bother plugging a phone in if it wasn't for a few people that don't have mobiles and landline
calls to mobile can be pricey

Mobile phone is a different matter, I do get them, just cut them off and block number, that seems to be getting less and less
too

We have had loads of calls this week. Had about six in one day, the numbers were the same, apart from the last four digits.

I got fed up with so many spam and scam calls and bought a BT handset with call management facility, it works very well. Since installing the new phone I've not had a single unwanted call.

Chris

We have a BT call guardian phone at home, system fine, my mobile doesn’t get answered unless I know the number, answering with abuse or time wasting only confirms that the line is live and the number will be passed to other callers. Numbers are checked later and added to the block list.
There are apparently some calls from abroad that can cost you a 50 quid charge if you answer, recognisable by the + prefix and the long number with an international code at the start, had a few and I just let these ring out.
