Ok so i have an sb900 and a nissis di866 canon fit. How can i get the di866 to fire from the flash off the sb900?

Push the centre button shortly, switch to M mode (not Av), push the centre button longer and adjust the slave mode. SD refers to "digital" ignoring TTL pre-flashes, whilst SF refers to "film" and triggers on any flash.

Thanks. I got it to fire now but it seems to be out of sync as i have taken a photo of it and its not showing the flash in the picture but it is flashing.

No problem.
That's odd. Maybe it doesn't respond well to the Nikon i-TTL preflash, given that it is supposed to work in the Canon system.
Try full manual on the triggering flash and SF on the Nissin.
