Hi I cant get the settings to allow just the remote flash to work does anyone know what i should be doing, I dont want the built in flash to triger as i need to catch the shadows in the picture.

Many thanks

Michael

The built in flash will always fire to trigger the remote flash, You can set the builtin flash to '--' in the commander setting on the camera and the internal flash will only fire a trigger flash.

or you can use one of these

How does the SB-800 receive the trigger information? Is it done via radio frequencies or infra-red or something like that?

If it is, why do we need a trigger flash?

i think they are 'monitor pre-flashes' used by for by Nikon CLS.

This is the bit that confuses me. If the SB800 has a light sensor which triggers its flash on detecting the cameras pre-flash then why would you use the shield to cover up the light from the pre-flash?

So I take it this is what happens in wireless flash mode on the SB800?

1. Shutter release button pressed
2. Camera on-board flash produces pre-flash
3. Shutter opens
4. SB800 fires wirelessly due to detecting pre-flash
5. Shutter closes

i suppose at the least you can turn rthe flash on to the lowest power

then cover it

The covers's usually used for macro work with the R1C1. During normal use the pre-flash should'nt affect the image. The pre-flash is used for CLS metering not firing the flash, the flash is fired by IR.

Gobo the light going forward with tin foil so it still scatters to the other CLS flashes.

if its anything like the canon ettl system, the on camera flash does fire but it does not in anyway affect the actual subject, i think it fires BEFORe the other flashes :) definitely doesnt affect the image though.
