ok, I havent played around with my flash ALL that much to be honest, just sort of dabbled with it a few times rather than making proper use of it, because I prefer using natural light when possible, I got it because it was needed for a trip out to florida earlier this year.
I'm not very good at using it well!! I need to practise

but what I was actually wondering is, can my flash work independently from my camera, or do I need to have them connected?

because obviously I can just set off a flash on it, but if I set it up on a tripod somewhere over the other side of the room, can I sink my flash with my shutter? or is it impossible.
 
yes you can, manual flash control is easy and cheap ttl control is expensive (you need an sb800/900 or a su800 I think)
 
To use it independently of the camera you would need to either get a TTL cord (it would still be attached to the camera, just not ON it) or you could use a radio trigger, using radio triggers means that the TTL abilities of the flash wont work.

Unfortunately the D5000 cant act as a CLS commander so to use it wirelessly with TTL you would need a SB800/900 or a SU800 as david1701 said.
