sb600 or similar as hair light?

Looking at studio flash, and it seems the main use for a 3rd head in a basic set up is as a hair light.

Would a sb600 or similar perform ok as a hair light, meaning the initial investment could be restricted to a 2 head unit? Presumable you would use the sb600 on a telephoto setting (or make a cardboard "snoot"!)

Yes. The only problem really is the lack of a modelling lamp, which means that you'll need to constantly check that it actually hits in the right place.
In most placements, you'd need a honeycomb to prevent lens flare, but that's do-able

I think hot-shoe guns are perfect for that kind of thing. Easy enough to flag them with a bit of cardboard and velcro to prevent spill, or FITP sells a neat little snoot with a honeycomb here http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showpost.php?p=2375433&postcount=1358

i agree. their small size means they're much more useful in smaller spaces/ceiling rooms as well.
