Hey everyone :)

Due to limitations set by my camera, I cannot use my SB600 off the camera so... who can recommend some tricks to make my photos a little bit more interesting?

Now im purely a hobbyist home photographer having fun, I have approximately £0 budget :D
The style im interested in having a go in is portraits, but not just your standard portrait, something with a bit of attitude and edge to it :)

Now I've heard people recommend using different color foil/paper to color stuff, also people recommend different materials to go on the flash gun itself to give different effects. So oh might TP community, help a guy out :)

As people have said in the other thread you really need to bounce that flash. It will make a world of difference to your shot. It takes a light source that is about 2x5cm and makes it 2x2 metres.

turn the SB600 onto i-TTL mode, bounce the flash other your shoulder (aim it at where you want your light to come from) and see what you get.

I personally also set the camera to manual to control the ambient light.

diffuser?

search 99p carex on here.

reflectors- white paper/card/tin foil

You can use a 2 pint plastic milk bottle with the top chopped off as a diffuser. Also check out strobist.com for more ideas. Sweetie wrappers & a elastci band (plenty left over from x-mas!) make good filters etc. There will generally be some cost, but if you can up your £0 budget to a couple of quid, you'll get somewhere.

You can also get filter sample packs from places like lee filters; I'm not sure how you go about it though, I'm sure someone will know.

Bouncing the flash as mentioned above is the best way forward. Also, use the different modes on the flash (if it has them) to strobe or flash at the end of a long exposure rather than the start etc etc

Yeah, like Alex says, you're going to have to bounce that flash.

An SB-600 mounted on the hotshoe blasted straight at your subject is still going to look like a flash mounted on the hotshoe blasted straight at your subject regardless of what you put in front of it (gels, diffusers, etc).

Gels are only going to change the colour of the light, not the hard harsh property of it. There are softboxes out there for flashes mounted on the hot-shoe, but due simply to physical limitations (like, your lens being in the way) these softboxes are very small so only provide a very minimal benefit (imo).

So, it's bouncing it off walls, behind you, to the side of you.

The only other option is to fork over a little cash and pick up an SC-17, SC-28, SC29 or similar non-Nikon iTTL compatible cable to get that flash off the hotshoe or invest in a cheap radio trigger/receiver.

Regarding Lee Filters free swatches...

Go to this page & fill it out, in the comments ask them for samples of lighting filters & make sure you mention you're a photographer so you get the right ones. Remember, you want the samples to choose what you will be buying from them ;)

Take a look at what Flash in the Pan has on offer in the Advertisers forum; he has some very reasonable kit for working with a flash that certainly won't break the bank and will help getting the flash off the camera.
