SB and D90

Depends if you want/need flash. The SB400 is a lot more powerful than the pop-up flash, you can also change its angle to bounce the flash.

If you go for the SB600 you can use it off camera with the CLS that the D90 has.

a 900 will compliment your 90 :D and any other Nikon you may get/own

Yes, but the 900 will also be bigger than the D90 itself :D:D:D:D

I picked up an SB-900 yesterday, and the thing is absolutely huge. I really couldn't believe it's size next to the Sb800

You think it's bad on a D90?? How about on a D40??

For the price of it (currently £94 in Jessops), the SB400 is great - it is noticeably (but not massively) more powerful than the built-in flash and of course, the 2-position bounce is really handy. Its a kind of half-way stop between the built-in and the SB600.

But the best bit about it is you can carry it around with you all day - its tiny.

Another good thing about the SB400 is that if you are using a lens that has a hood on it (it happens with my 18-70 or my 17-50) when with a pop-up you would get a shadow from the hood with the SB400 you dont :)

gosh.....see what you mean. Maybe a power pack would make it better or an off-camera type bracket.
Getting back to the ops question, I have gone down the road of mixing different flash units and not been very happy. My advice would be to stick with Nikon and get the best you can justify for the money.
Last week I was part of a four man crew, 3 Nikons and 1 Fuji S5, all fitted with SB-900s.
Two ops had problems with overheating and had to rest their guns until they cooled down
I personally have never had a problem :)

That's apparently an issue with the SB-900 i understand. A bit too sensitive on the temperature sensor.

The SB-400 is an absolute godsend sometimes (but only when I remember to take it abviously)

I picked up an SB-400 last week for £67 from comet. Reduced as they're discontinuing it. Fantastic value !!
