I am just playing around with my SB-800 trying to figure out what all the settings do. I have got it set up as a remote and using my D300 as a commander. On my D300 I have got the on board flash set to "--" so it shouldn't effect the shot, thats ok I think! On the remote mode selection on the D300 I have selected TTL for the SB-800 but when I look on the display on the SB-800 it shows Manual Zoom. Is that correct or should it change as I change the zoom on the lens?

Hope that all makes sense!

I,m pretty sure it should change as you zoom in and out with your lens, although please someone else correct if i,m wrong.

Tel, it changes when I have the flash mounted on the hotshoe, but when I use it wireless I can't move it off manual zoom.

Not sure about that one my friend as i,ve yet to use mine like that, if you don,t get any other responses PM hacker or joe T as i know there other nikon users with a similar setup to yourself.

I just found this:

The remote flash doesn't read your camera's zoom setting. Since the flash is off the camera it makes no sense for the flash to duplicate the camera's angle of view. You'll want to adjust the flash's zoom setting manually.

This setting isn't important; I use the flash's zoom setting for creative effect to direct the light as I see fit.

So everything is working fine, guess its a case of trying shots and adjusting if necessary.

I was just going to say, why would a remote flash be on anything other than manual zoom and the the distance between it and the subject will invariably be different to the distance between the camera and the subject.

Yeah this seems pretty obvious now, I was having a bit of a stupid moment!!!

So are there any go by's as to what zoom settings to use when using off camera?
