Hi all,

I am having a serious problem with my SB-800 after months that was working perfectly.

Suddenly the TTL mode stopped to work. If I set the SB 800 to TTL it seems to be firing after or before the shutter but the picture is always black. It looks to be completely out of sync with the camera.

I've tried every combination of settings imaginable but nothing change.

I have also reset the camera (D300) and the flash itself but nothing... I can only use the flash in the manual mode. :'(

Is there anybody that had same problem in the past and can help me to solve this?

Thank you.

The SB800 or the D300? :P

Oh... £50 the pair

Back to the op's problem....

First thing to check is that you're using decent, fully charged batteries. Then make use the camera isn't set to fire the flash in rear curtain mode and that the flash is in TTL mode. The shutter speed should be no higher than 1/250 (although if the flash is on the hotshoe or a ttl cable this should be restricted by the flash anyway).

If you are experiencing these problems with the camera on the hotshoe then try it off-camera using the D300's onboard flash to trigger it. On the other hand if the problem is occuring with the flash off-camera, then try it on the hotshoe and see if that makes any difference...

Do you have a mate nearby that has a SB800 and nikon camera? If you could try your flash on another camera that discounts the camera as does sticking their flash on your camera. Its a shame you are 30+ miles away, sure someone will be nearer.

Ok, Batteries are new as I said before, changed 2 times. Tried off camera, tried with different lens. Been to the shop and we used another camera, but still the same. Camera was reset. Flash was reset. Camera is set to front curtain mode and shutter not higher then 1/250.

Doesn't work... I have tried everything.

I have contacted Nikon but still no reply from them :(

Fact is that doing a research in internet seems other people are experiencing the same problem:

'All of a sudden My Nikon D100 SLR and the SB800 flash unit are not talking to each other in TTL mode.
Still works fine in AA mode and Manual mode (flash modes) but the TTL mode has gone dark. Like the flash isn't firing at anything like the correct power.'
