SB-800/900 over an SB-600

The 600 cannot be used as a wireless commander flash to control other flashes, whereas the 800 and 900 can. The 800 and 900 have built in white bounce cards, (wow!) the 600 doesn't. The 600 is slightly less powerful, but recycle times are marginally faster. The 900 has a little filter holder for colour correction gels - on the D700 and D3 this will automatically change the camera's white balance to suit. There is no PC port socket on the 600.

Can't think of many other differences that matter tbh...

Well dunno about that - the little wheel-thingy is a pain if you're used to the other buttons that Speedlights have had since the SB80...
But - I do think the creative possibilities opened up by this beast will involve more than just leaving it on auto/bounce like I usually do...I'm looking forward to exploring some of the off-camera set-ups...

Normally I look for an excuse not to use flash...now I'm looking for opportunities to go and play...

Thanks for the advice. I decided to go for the SB-800 for the added power and the PC socet etc

When using the flash and camera in comander mode does it have to be in line of sight?

the sb900 is a lot easier to use than a sb800 or 600!

I'd tend to agree that the 900 is much easier to use,I bought the 800 the day after buying the 900, so I was "new" to both and I have to say that the 900 is much easier to pick up and use straight out of the box.

In theory, yes - you can get away with the flash being slightly out of line depending on the environment, but not in the way you can with wireless or radio triggers.

What FITP said. Although CLS via IR is rubbish outdoors. Best to go with either cable(s) and CLS or radio without CLS (unless you have plenty of $$$ to spend)
