Hey guys n gals

I used to have a sb-400 that I basically bounced off the ceiling to take photos of the kids. However the limitations of this flash were soon apparent when I had to bounce it from a wall when doing portrait shots.

So I sold the sb400 and just received a sb-600.

I can now bounce the flash all over the place as required. But I've just discovered commander mode on my d90 and have been playing with my flash off the camera.

My question is how would I position the flash in the best position off the camera in a normal sized living room. I only have the one flash. Any ideas or links to diagrams would be great.

I've had a look on strobist.blogspot.com but the info seems to be hard to wade through and looks to be talking more about more complicated setups.

Thanks in advance

Flash tests and more flash tests, that's the answer.

No two rooms are the same, position a suitable object/person in your room and flash away, don't forget to keep notes.

thanks both, guess i'll just have to expirement

thanks - yes ive already had a little play with it last night. It seemed to work really well.

I was more concerned with the best positioning of the flash in the room to light up the subject without casting and harsh shadows.

I'm in the same boat as you Ben (all be it with my first flash!)- so will be stalking you for the next few months to some degree if thats ok!! :D
