I had that problem when I first got mine, and I just retracted the wide-angle diffuser to get it zooming again.

I got mine from Gray's of Westminster, and cursed their name when I thought they sold me a faulty device.
Retracted the wide-angle diffuser, and was full of joy.

The 600 can actually develop a fault with it's zoom, but it's dead easy to fix....
