Tough one. Speaking personally, I'd want a tripod first as I far prefer natural light shots anyway.

Good shout, Tripods are a must for any mans kit IMO..;)
 
i actually have both items at the moment,

however the Nikon SB25 gun isnt compatable with the iTTL of my D70,

and my tripod is a cheapy jessops jobby that i have had for ten years

i am leaning towards the triopd,
and am thinking of either the Manfrotto 190 or the 055 pro with a fluid head
any recomendations ?

You can't think too carefully before you buy a tripod. There's a definite trade off between weight, portability and rigidity. Whether we like it or not lightweight doesn't usually mean rigid. If you go too light the slightest breeze will set it moving, and remember you may be mounting some pretty heavy camera/lens combos on it.

Make sure you get good rigid legs and as portable as possible with closed length being a big consideration - you can always change the head. I have a Manfrotto tripod, the legs are ace even after 20 years, but it has a large 3 way head which is heavy (originally bought to support medium format) so at some stage I need a lighter head, so now you've started me off again. :hissyfit:
 
I'll be looking for a head without too many knobs and handles to turn, which is the last thing you want in the field for wildlife etc, so I'll be looking at a ball head to keep it small and light, and probably a one touch release, adjust and lock function.

I quite fancy the Manfrotto 322 RC 2....

u see weight aint a problem for me, as standing bare foot am over 17 stone ( 118 kg ) :smilenod: ,

so lugging things round aint a problem, lol

why u think i bought the Nikon, at least its lighter then the Zenith i used to own, dont you just love brass bodied camera's , lol

thats a nice grip, but a bit to rich for my pocket afer shelling out for the pod as well,

but i know what ou mean about not having too many knobs to twiddle, it causes confusion and time wasting for wildlife and sports photography,

i was thinking of more like a panning head suitable for camcorders etc, will prove handy for the sports pix i want to take

...or you could buy the SB600 and use the spare cash to buy a dictionary :thumb::p

I would go for the 055PRO because it is a taller tripod so you will need to use the centre column less (if at all) and therefore should get a more rigid platform.

I have the 055PRO and the 322RC2 and mainly use them with to support the 400mm F5.6 (plus 1.4TC) for wildlife pictures.

Well men have been used to 1 extendable all their life, so 3 more has to be a bonus ;) :getmecoat
