Ive just made some changes to a picture using some layers. I flattened the image and went to 'Save As' choosing Jpeg.
Now Im seeing that the image is saved as a 'File' and when I try to open it, in PS it says 'cannot complete request as wrong type of document'.
Can someone advise me on what Ive done wrong here?

I don't think you can save a 16bit image as a jpeg. The option is not there when you "save as".

In Windows explorer try editing the name of the file and add the extension.jpg (make sure you have extensions visbile in your windows settings) and then try reopening it.

Or you could try to open it from an internet browser using File/Open/ then browse to file. They can sometimes open files without the extension being "correct". This would at least prove it was not corrupt.

Hi, I've had this happen once before. Not sure what causes it. Try manually putting the .jpg extension after the file name and try again. If that doesn't work try forcing PS to open the file - ie Open PS and go File>Open etc rather than double clicking on the icon. The other thing to try is opening the file in MS Paint (asuming you're on a PeeCee) and resaving it, again go File>Open. Bizarrley I've found Paint can often open a jpg that PS can't. Good luck!

I havent a clue what it is FB, I cant open it with anything.
I did everything the same way as I usually do (Im really crap with the technicalities of PS so I stay as basic as poss).

Pic is for a comp this Sunday at GMEX so I need to get it off to PHotobox today.
I have the original but I needed whats in the 'extra layer' to tie it in with the comp theme, ho hum!

Ahhh! .... thank-you Grendel.
Ive opened it the way you suggested in PS and resaved as Jpeg again and this time it seems to have worked.
Dont know why I didnt think to try that but I think my mind is in more need of sleep than my body, lol!
Picture now uploading to Photobox, so again .... thanks!

It sounds like you're saving it without the file extension of .jpg

:)

If you open windows explorer (My computer, or any other folder), go to Tools > Folder Options > View, and untick "Hide extensions for known file types", you can see the file extensions on your files. Go to the problematic file and rename it and add the .jpg (You need the aforementioned option unticked before it will work).

Afterwards, if you dont like seeing file extensions, feel free to reverse the option (ticking it).

Glad it worked! There's nothing worse than that sinking feeling when you think all you hard work in PS has been lost :(

Thanks so much for all your help here guys.
Im still very much at elementary level with all this & I try not to step out of my comfort zone too often, so when things go belly-up I panic, tut!
Knew I could trust you guys to know what to do though.
Dont suppose you fancy assisting with all the paperwork that goes with this project to, do you!
