save formats for printing plus DVD help

I know absolutely nothing about this

I want to send some family pics to my sister so that she can print them - canvas and the like - so I want to send them high res on a DVD or CD

currently they are in RAW

questions:

1. what format should I save them in (TIFF or EPS or something else?)

2. should I use a DVD or CD?

3. should I save as a data file or a multi media file?

4. should I finalise the disk?

I want whoever she chooses as a printer to be able to print straight from the disk without charging her extra for fiddling with formats and stuff.

Please structure your replies as if you were talking to a complete novice (which I am) and please don't use jargon lol

I'm assuming your sister doesn't know anything about file formats, etc?


On this basis, I'd suggest a high quality jpeg. To be honest, I'd just suggest sharing the files with your sister by DropBox or Google Drive etc., rather than faffing around with discs. She can then select the images she's wanting to download and cherry pick them from your shared drive.

But if you're using optical media, then yes finalise the discs to ensure comparability with most cd or DVD drives.

my sister is computer illiterate so going the cloud route is definitely out. Also, she'd still have to put them on a disk or memory stick to take to the print shop.

would high quality JPEG be good enough for making a large-ish canvas print?

Depends a lot on how large the file is (in pixels). When doing large prints I tend to resize using interpolation to get the file to the correct size for printing so I can see that the quality is good enough for printing before sending it off to the printers.

I tend to save everything at 300ppi but many canvas printers will tell you that 200 is enough. As long as you're shooting reasonably high resolution images on your camera and you're not cropping too much in post processing then your files should be good for poster sized prints no problem.

It would. Save them as a high quality jpeg onto a USB stick and send this to her.
