Morning,

Has anyone moved from a Sata SSD to NVME Gen 3 for their OS and Apps drive, did it make a difference to your machine booting and photo editing?

I am thinking of buying a NVME just for OS and Apps use. My LR and Capture One Catalogues would be on the SSD/NVME with the photos on a 7200 HDD, and not sure if it is worth the spend/move.

Thank you

I have not changed but my desktop has ssd boot drive and my laptop an nvme, both have 4core i5 processors.
There in not a great deal of difference in boot time, couple of seconds in favour of the nme
I have just boosted the ram in the desktop to 32 gb against 8 in the laptop that makes a marked difference.
Forgot to add I have two ssd,s one with os and progs and lr cat and photos being edited on the other with storage on a 7200 hdd.
Personally I would buy more ram up to max

Thank you Sir.

I have 8gb ram and have ordered two sticks of 8 so should have 24 in total and will check how it goes. Will keep a look out for a cheap nvme and not rush into buying one.

Yes I have.
Went from a WD blue ssd for boot to a Crucial NVME p2 and feel no difference in boot time or app opening speeds.
Regarding ram I always find they work best in pairs.

Thank you @matt b,

Will start of with the two when they arrive and decided if I upgrade to another stick of 8 to make it a total of 32. The machine is an old dell i5 6th gen so do not want to spend too much on it, but will be an upgrade from my current i5 2nd gen:).

That's a good idea.
Mine is built on a ryzen CPU as was a budget gaming pc rather than trying to get a ps5 but has now grown to be a bit of a do it all pc that I will be upgrading to 32gb of ram in the near future.

I went from SSD (Samsung) to NVME Gen 4 (980Pro) and the boot time is literally 2 or so secs (it was around 20-30 secs previously).
Thank you, not sure if Gen3 would be as good as the Gen4. My machine can only take Gen3.

My new build takes around 30 sec from button press to login screen, which is longer than the laptop it replaced, and that's running gen 4 NVME (2tb WD black). However most of that is the mobo sorting itself out, post messages and giving the user time to adjust bios settings. In use everything is nicely fluid and import/export tasks are completed rapidly.
