Sandisk SD cards - have I been scammed?

When I first bought a DSLR in July, I bought two 2Gb Sandisk SD cards from eBay. Both 'looked' genuine, and had a hologram sticker on the back. One still works, one packed up about 3 months ago.

Today I received three in the post (bog standard Sandisk 2Gb) but they're different. They have no hologram sticker and the font for '2.0' and 'Gb' on the front looks different. They came from 7dayshop.com.

So... does anyone know if they are both variations of the genuine item, or is one/both a fake? I can't imagine it'd make much difference, but I'd like to know.

Thanks.

Hi,

7 Day shop is a very reputable business, and I can't imagine them deliberately selling fake cards.

Check the card by putting it in a card reader, then going to my computer, right click the reader drive, and click properties. All will be recealed.

It's appalling. Are these Ebay sellers getting away with it? In that article it tells you not to buy from them, but doesn't say what Ebay is doing to prevent fake cards from being sold.

Thanks for the comments. I've read some guides and they strongly suggest that the older cards with the hologram are fake. These came from eBay. The ones from 7dayshop appear to be genuine.

You bought them very cheap Sherlock, They are working, Just use them and put it down to experience.:(

I don't think anyone will want to know after 3 months.:shake:

Its wrong, I know its wrong but they are still getting away with it after all this time.

I would suggest you email sandisk and ask them to help you identify the cards.

I've bought a couple of extreme III cards in 4 and 1 gb capacities from 7day and they all check out with the markings and serial numbers printed on them.

I have a genuine Sandisk Ultra 2 Card and one I got off ebay which I'm sure is fake. The fake jobby performs fine in the camera, but loading shots into RSP takes forever in comparison and really shows up the difference!

I went through all the ID procedures when I first suspected the new card and nothing was conclusive comparing the two to say fake or genuine with any real conviction.

There are so many forgeries about that some of the ebay vendors don't realise they're selling forgeries anyway.

I can't remember now but I went through all the advised points, packaging and logos on packaging - holograms and numbers etc on the actual discs. Some points said 'fake' and some said 'genuine' in both cases. Very confusing. I think the forgers must keeping upping their game to keep pace.

Contacting Sandisk is probably the best bet I'd think if they can be bothered to reply - they must get a lot of queries.

The fake job has never been a problem in the cameras, it's more than quick enough, but downloading to the PC the difference is substantial.

My mate has just bought a counterfit Extreme IV from Ebay...

You can verify you product with Sandisk themselves on their counterfit hotline:

0207-3654-193

The ebay ID of the "interdiscount2007" who has a very large feedback score... oh and the photo in the auction is of a genuine Sandisk CF card...

Sandisk confirmed it as fake by the serial number and other factors.

Be careful out there!

Not sure if this is a little late now but amazon.co.uk are having a massive sale and you can get SD cards for as little as £1.58 for 1GB now...if only they would have a sale on CF cards to....:'( But I have heard lots about fake memory cards on Ebay its one reason why I wont skimp on memory cards.

Be careful of the postage charge on those Amazon ones, it's not Amazon supplying them but one of their marketplace sellers.

Just got a Sandisk Extreme III from ebay and you guessed it, its a fake. Ebayer will take it back and fully refund, but it seems ebay will do nothing about it unless Sandisk complain. I can imagine his local plod will ignore it too.

For reference I have uploaded pics of the fake and the genuine card so people can see the differences.

That's great to know, Ian. I've just ordered a 4Gb Extreme III card from them and I didn't want to have to be posting it back or anything. :)

That will reveal fake capacities but won't confirm performance speed at all, I don't think. Only uploading/downloading will do that, and that's best done with a comparison card. CT's situation demonstrates that nicely

Have tried this with my EXTREME 111 2.0 gb It shows an icon CFMD and it says eos digital.
Nothing says it's genuine.I am not sure what the " all will be revealed " should show :)

It came with a lovely little case :)
