Sandbags!

Anyone use sandbags to weigh down their lighting stands or tripods?

I have just purchased a new lighting stand here and figure it will be ok with the flash, just concerned when it has the 80cm softbox on too so figured I could weigh it down with a sandbag... anyone got any thoughts.. Personally I might scrap the soft box unless indoors and use the diffuser. I will try it out and review here!

Also, have you made your own - got to love a bit of strobist DIY!:D

Teamwork stock some, but they're not really cheap given what they're used for.

I've asked a very similar question here before, and was told to use sport-sochs. Works great, cheap, and disposable too :thumbs:

Of course, why didnt i think of that. :bang::thinking:

Polythene bag filled with sand, stuffed into a sport-sock. Makes perfect sense.
 
I just use the issued ones from the stores - Army issue sandbags can be bought at surplus shops, I think.

I use heavy-duty plastic bags to double-bag the sand first, then double-width gaffer tape all the edges so there's no seepage. The hessian bag goes over the top...looks 'traditional' and doesn't slip around like the plastic ones...

Only half-fill the sandbag to allow for shaping (and it'll be less likely to burst).
 
I went out for a shoot with Cowasaki the other day and his octabox was like a sail in the wind so we tied it down to his Peli case on one side and the isofix base of my daughter's car seat on the other side. DIY lightstands weights at its best!!!
 
Depending on the ground surface you're shooting on, tent pegs and bungee cords can be an excellent way to hold down your light stands, and they don't weigh a ton either (which is kinda the point of strobism and running light).

Make sure you've got your light exactly where you want it before you peg it down though, as they're pretty much immovable unless you pull out all the pegs and start over. :)
 
tricky to use real sandbags with those konig stands. Get some ankle weights from argos, will do the job fine.
