Hi all.

Has anyone installed a custom ROM on their S2 yet?
Thinking of putting Cyanogen Mod on mine. But need a few questions answered first please!

Does the Swype keyboard still work?
Can I put the files needed to install Cyanogen onto the phone memory, or do I need a memory card?

Any other ROM's worth considering?

Cheers

Can't speak from the same perspective but can speak from doing custom roms in general.
The swype keyboard would have to be part of the cyanogen mod build for it to remain.
If it isn't though there are 3rd party swype keyboards that you can download off the market.

As for the cyanogen files, they have to go onto a memory card as flashing is done by deleting the contents of the phone memory ready for a fresh install.

Remember you will have to root your phone first before you can flash a rom.

You may be worth waiting on the official ice cream sandwich rom update for your phone. It can't be far away.

Morning Stu.

Thanks for the info.
I think waiting for the Sandwich is the best thing. I didn't even know it was due!

Apparently it's not very far away at all......

Cheers mate

No worries Andy.
If you wait for the official ICS you won't invalidate your warranty either

I'm running CheckROM V4 on mine, nice and smooth/stable

Just trying Cyanogen7 on my DHD...to be honest, compared to Runnydroid it's horrible :(

The guy I sit next to at work has put a beta of ICS on his DHD and to be honest, for a beta it works really well and is so slick compared to 2.x.x.
He even showed me google chrome browser on it, very nice!

Been looking at the IceColdSandwich rom, but people seem to having a lot of issues at the minute so I think i'll wait a while (new to this rooting business!)

I'm deffo going to wait for ICS then.
Seems a bit of a mystery as to when it's officially on it's way.........

I'm currently using MIUI on mine, but thinking about trying the latest CM version soon.

CM7 nightlies for me on my DHD. Wouldnt go back to a HTC sense ROM again now.

Using swype so, install it via the beta download part in from the website which im sure will work.

As a wee personal update, I now have ICS running on my Desire.

What a difference to Froyo/Gingerbread and I certainly don't miss sense!

Which rom are you using mate?

I'm using sandvolds ICS RC5 beta version (can be found on xda forum) with apex launcher and native ap2sd.
With an already ext partitioned SD card I now have 1gb of onboard storage.
Still a work in progress to fix a few things but nothing major.

Swype is downloadable from their website (www.swype.com) and should work on any fairly standard Android 2.x. Worked well on Honeycomb on my Xoom, but less so on ICS.

Ive got a leaked Samsung version of ICS on my SGS2 - followed threads over at xda-developers.
Works well, havent had any issues apart from a couple of apps dont work and cant install from the market if I have external SD card mounted.

ICS is the way forward!
I like the simplicity of creating folders and how easy it is to uninstall apps with 1 touch.
Very RAM too.
When my Desire was on Froyo/Gingerbread daily operation left me with about 120/130mb RAM.
ICS now leaves me with 200-230mb RAM.

Are you on the original desire? I might flash that the keep me ticking over until upgrade time in May

Yeah the original Desire (the one with the crappy 147mb of onboard memory!)

I put ICS on for the very same reason as you, to keep me ticking over until my next upgrade which is due in August.
For a beta its actually a not bad ROM on the Desire.
The builder is doing regular updates (almost nightlies) so any problems usually get ironed out pretty quick.

As a note though - the camera and video recorder don't work very well/if at all (not a problem for me as I don't use them anyway)

I'm currently on checkrom v6 and it's been pretty good for me. I'm going to wait until official ICS has got into the hands of developers before installing a custom ICS ROM - I can't do without video recording.

now running IceColdSandwich rom...liking it so far. Not one for using the camera on it so don't really miss that.
