well i hope its ok to join in 2 weeks late, this is my take on the theme "style", i had been trying to take a picture of my daughters reflection straightening her hair in the mirror but it just wasnt working, so i ended turning to her just as she was finishing of styling her hair for a party, im not that happy with it i dont like the pink dressing gown in the background which i hadnt noticed, and i hope i have now worked out how to resize and post the photos correctly !

Good on you for joining; feel free to play catch up - no ones counting ;)

I don't notice the dressing gown really. Nice simple pic but needs a bit of something to make it have focus and I can't see one. Keep going though :)

I dont think the dressing gown is a problem cos it is out of focus anyway. I am trying to picture how it would look if her right arm wasn't in soft focus. Great shot regardless and on theme.

Hi Sam

Welcome to the Photo52 and don't worry about where you start, the main thing is taking part. I am sure you will be able to catch up in good time.

I too don't see a problem with the dressing gown, infact I think it works quite well as it adds to the image in the sense that it gives it a presence to a girls room.

You have captured an image that suits the theme well.

A good start and good luck with the rest of the project.

Cheers

Dawn :)

I really like this shot. I actually think the dressing gown adds to the shot because it shows that it is your daughters bedroom which is the background to the image.

I'm still learning alot about photography but i have always read that in a portrait shot the focus should always be on your subjects eyes and this is where my focus always is when i take photographs of people. From what i can tell i think this is where your focus was - nice picture

Thanks everyone for your replies, im going to enjoy this:) i really welcome feedback its good to hear the good and bad as ive got lots of learning to do.

thought i add this to catch up as i was a couple of weeks late, i took this a little while ago when i was having a little play around after reading a photo mag, thought it worked for the theme accommadation.

Those are a great pair of photos.

The portrait is excellent. Very photogenic girl and you've caught lovely expression. Nice light on her hair. If I'm being picky I would have preferred both eyes in focus. I also feel there's a problem with the light on her left hand - I'd be tempted to soften that in PP.

The shells pic is also very good. The white background suits the subject very well and brings out the subtle colours. The lighting is good, but perhaps a little flat.

Brilliant start.

The shell photo is great, how did you set up and light it? If you don't mind sharing your skills that is! I'd love to be able to take that kind of "studio" photo.

Thanks so much, im glad you liked the shell photo i was really proud of myself, im very new to all this really and dont really know about lighting yet, i set the shells up on a box by my backdoor so they were naturally lit on top of a piece of white printer paper, so very basic! i did a little photoshop to remove some chips in the shell, im no expert at photoshop either!
I dont know how to get both eyes in focus in the portrait shot is it because of the aperture i used that stops both being in focus or is it something else im doing or not doing?
