That depends on the image.
I would expect little difference on well lit shots at lower ISO.
The difference will be more aparrent at higher ISO settings.

I am having the same dilema at the moment... how to justify a new toy 
The key thing for me is the ISO, the 400d is pretty poor on anything above ISO400.
Is the viewfinder larger on the 50d? I looked through one in a shop and it seemed larger, or that just my imagination?

I changed from the 450d to the 50d. What a great camera it is. Totally different feel, much chunkier and more solid feeling. The LCD screen is a dream, great resolution and realy clear.
I spent some time with my mums 400d over Christmas, it felt like a toy compared to the 50d. The ISO on the 50d is far more useable, definately what you need in this dreary UK weather.
