Salmon run and new pass

I know of a great location in Cardiff for the yearly Salmon leap, but they have just installed a new Salmon pass, I know its a pretty stupid question, but how much of a difference does this generally make to the run in terms of those jumping compared to those who take the "easy" route?

I'm guessing a pretty big difference....??
 
Makes quite a difference from what ive seen.

Took the Gf up to see the run last year, to a spot i used to fish with dad 5 or so years ago.

Gutted to find a fish pass! Fair enough its better for fish (supposedly but then weaker fish get to breed potentially) but was sorry to see the natural weir all but replaced with a concrete fish pass, stayed for an hour and seen 1 fish have a go.

Yes, wouldn't be worth doing otherwise. Aim is to maximise the number of salmon that reach the spawning grounds.
 
I guess it was a pretty stupid question to start with, but there has been a pass of sorts there for a while, but this new one certainly looks a little grander!
You normally see a few jumpers around now, with the main run being in a few weeks, last year was poor anyhow, was just hoping to improve on shots from 2008.

I was there yesterday..... took the kids down the trail...

They were jumping yesterday.....(salmon, that is) Not many...... half a dozen every 5 mins or so....

It certainly attracted the passers by.....

I shouldn't have taken my fishing kit out of the car to put the bikes in - LOL

Yup, thats correct..... It was between 4 and 4pm

They were attracting quite a few onlookers......

I managed to grab a poor shot with my G10, just to prove that they were there.......

Quite a few could be seen swimming up the bypass channel ..... but some still insisted on jumping and failing !! Young Males !! HA!!

I meant to say between 4 and 5pm ...... We left just after 5pm ....

There was a chinese/Japanese Man/lady there - taking snaps with a Nikon setup..... he was there for the hour - not sure his lady friend was overly keen as she seemed to be unfamiliar with our cold weather....

You may have seen us there - Me & and 2 young'uns on bikes / Wifey with Pushchair .....

Are you referening tot he weir by the boating club ?

If so, I was refering to the weir further up than that..... ( I can't see the pic due to work restrictions :( )

The weir at Radyr should be good for salmon too - don't know if there's a pass there but it's not too big for fish to jump.

Like said already, salmon ladders generally help fish navigate quicker with less stress - stress is the big killer of fish that aren't really feeding in the first place in freshwater. The more eggs laid at the top end the better chances for future generations and what with salmon stocks being what they are, they need all the help they can get from outnumbering the gill nets.

When I'm down to see the mother-in-law in Ferndale I might have to have a look. The river around the stadium and castle is prime fishery - barbel to make your eyes water, plus monster grayling and big chub.

I'm off Thursday, Friday - providing the weather is kind. I'll probably head down the trail....

Number 2 son took his stabilisers off tonight.... so we are into the proving grounds stage !!
