This will make you laugh. So back in the summer, I effectively lost my job overnight, earning £20K, so I had to find something quick time. I started working for a large camera shop, no names, but not Jessops.....err, that leaves one or two then.

Anyway, I suppose you could say I know my lemons but in Dec, I got salesman of the Year award as I hit £53,500 in sales in the 20 trading days in Dec alone. The nearest guy to me had £44k and then in our store, £19k. Overall, our shop finished top in the national league/sales charts, which pleased everyone and I got a nice bonus, a few tit bits from various manufacturers, such as a TZ3, hopefully a nice G-shock watch and a god awful 'shield' which now has my name engraved on it alongside various other winners dating back, to be handed back next Dec.

The irony? Well, some days I am so bored about talking about cameras, I have to find something else. There is a weird paradox working in camera retail. You end up chatting about cameras all day, but not actually taking any pix. Nice to be successful for a change - me and work have never really got on.

I am starting feel depressed again as I am bi-polar, but I dont know what to do as I cant find another job, but part of me says I should stay, I just find the hours very tiring and the money is not great.

Just need a pep talk from old friends on here. Cant really talk to anyone else. You know that feeling you get when silly things are exagerated by your own head.

As for the low point you refer to ... :thinking: ... I reckon a contributor is the time of year m8 ... :shrug: ... it ain't great is it and plenty of peeps feel at their lowest around now so hopefully for you it will pass quite quickly as the weather and other opportunities improve ... ;) ... although I can sympathise with the bi-polar thing I have no first hand experience so cannot possibly say I know how you feel ... but you are right ... you have plenty of buddies on here and I am sure others will be more helpful than I could ever be m8 ... :D


Good luck with it and I would suggest sticking it out at least until something better comes along ... :shrug: ... what you got to lose after all ... :suspect:

I'd start with "what do you want to be when you grow up?"
it's actually a serious question
people often put off doing things until.... some unspecified time/event in the future

if you've always wanted to run your own business, for example, JFDI !!!
 
Get creative, go out there, and take some pictures. Give yourself a word, and work to it. Today it's windy, so the word 'wind' comes to mind. Think of a colour, yellow, red, blue, what fits the theme.

You have great creative potential, use it. Digital cost nothing. submit to picture agencies etc.

BTW I have started to use shutterchance as a photoblog after seeing yours.
 
Wow, 2.5k a day isn't to be sniffed at. I know which store Pete, was browsing their site for local stores and saw your name pop up ;)

I think you need to get out and shoot as Diego again, your sports shooting was top notch but I reckon Diego is the real jam in your doughnut :thumbs:

On the work front I know what your saying about feeling bored so what about getting away from the retail side and look for a job as a Canon rep, product training, or something else that would give you more chance to travel around a bit?

Yeah, but I have lost my weekends. Thats what is hard...Sat was my day, whether street or sport.
 
Well done on The award Pete, very impressive. I stay firmly away from our sales side of the business, as the gift of the gab I do not have, but I have every admiration for those that can do it!

Sadly, it really is 'that' time of the year for many, not just those with Bi-polar issues - the excitment and hectic rush of the build up to christmas is over, the weather is miserable, everyone is skint and life just feels like it isn't all it could be. Anychance you can book a few days off and get yourself out and away from people, just you, your camera, and your own imagination? Take some air, some breathing space and take stock of what you are doing and where you want to be a year from now. Easy to say I know, but its an easier thing to do when you are not surrounded by the thing you feel is getting you down [your job].

..oh, and smile, get out with friends and dig deep, its your life, make it a good one ;) :hug:
 
Congrats on the sales dude. Its your earlier work that I do really miss. Sports doesn't interest me, but your street work was great. Please try and get back into that if only to inspire the people here. I know what you mean about exaggerating things in your head. Things can easily get on top of you, work, life, money, etc. I don't have any advice to offer really, not something I've been able to over come :) I do know that its nice to just talk with people, whether they can offer advice or not, talking does help. Congratulations on the award Pete.
I agree with Petemc, your street work was inspirational, I also love your sports stuff as that is one of my favourite subjects. It would be good for you to get out and shoot what you like, as you express yourself well that way.
I know how it feels being down at this time of year as I suffer with S.A.D. and November through to February can be very hard. I hope things work out for you in 2008.

You need to shift your thinking Pete, that's a bi-polar approach and you know it :nono: Don't make me get all CBT on you ;)

Saturday isn't the only day of the week you can do those things and if other stuff is getting in the way then maybe you need to shuffle the other stuff around to make time for you to get out shooting for the sheer enjoyment of it :thumbs:
 
Yeah, know what you are saying. Thanks all. Will try and stay positive.....hoping to get away at the end of March and the break will do me a world of good after last years 3 operations.
 
I too work in retail - and find it so very boring - when our shop isnt hitting its 103k target between 6 of us [we work in jewellery] and I love the fact that I dont work sundays [just annoys me that most meets are saturdays lol] and I get a day off in the week - which is great - cos its QUIET - the kids are at schools and the good photograph places - are nice and peaceful!

Its just the old adage of if you work in a sweet shop you soon get fed up of eating the sweets. :love:

It could be a whole lot worse, you could work in Mcdonalds, think about all the lovely burgers you could eat and sell your customers every day :puke:

Stick at it mate and enjoy your Holiday when it comes, If your really bored just come to Sheffield for a weekend you will return thinking its great in Bristol. :lol:

One aspect of Bi-polar is focusing and amplifying the negatives in your life (my mum has this illness, i've got 20 years experience). I can recommend one thing. Blank sheet of paper, a line down the middle, one side pro's of you life, other side con's.

You will be surprised how many good things there are in your life. Now think hard about where you want to be in 5, 10, 15 years time.

I know its a cliche but every cloud has a silver lining. You took this job for a reason and it will lead you somewhere that you want to be.
