For safety reasons it can only be EITHER charging OR in use, but not both.
In practice, where mains power is available you plug the charger in. When the model disappears for face painting or to change clothes simply switch the unit off, it will then be charging until you start using it again, guaranteeing that you won't run out of power.
What I personally would like (and I'm speaking for myself not Lencarta) is a powerpack that can run from either - i.e. mains power in the studio, to get fast recycling and powerful modelling lamps, and the ability to switch to battery power when out and about.
