Howdy - so I'm heading on Safari in a few weeks ... already loaded with plenty of kit. While I don't think I ever intended on taking my main Tripod I was toying with the idea of a small travel one (Velbon luxi) which I would not be massively update should it get stolen or the like ..

Thing is I'm trying to work out when I'd use it - specifically on Safari .. as most stuff will be on beanbag from car ..

Just looking for advice from folks who have been on Safari .. did you take one and use it .. or not and regret it?

cheers,

Nigel

I (will*) take a Redged TSC 427K and a Manfrotto 393 or a small Lensmaster
The 427K is small, light and you can split one leg as a tripod - if you get the RNB-2N Head, (which sometimes comes with it), that is good enough and you can use it instead of the Manfrotto or Lensmaster

I use a tripod as much as I can with my 300mm f4 and (+ TC14Ell as needed), but obviously not from the back of the truck

The set up is light enough and portable enough not to spoil the experience, but good enough to get some good shots

* last few years I took something similar but not as strong
I hav used the 427K a lot this year and it is good as a travel tripod ….. really light and handy

The reason to take a tripod is to shoot some starscapes in the evening - last time I checked it was rather difficult to use a tripod in a car, even a big safari car.

This!

And for starscapes one of them very short tripods (20cm ish) will work OK.

I went to Kenya on safari and I never used a tripod in the day, its spontaneous on the whole! Maybe if you do nighttime photography!

it depends if you are in the back of a land cruiser or on foot …….. or both …….. I use a tripod when I can, especially with anything of over 300mm

some of the images you see on Safari are once in a lifetime and if you have time ……. use a tripod, IMHO …. at least after you have taken a couple of shots
