Yes
My worst fears were realised when i went to check the flooding situation at lunchtime today, saltwater has flooded the fen and the fish population has suffered badly which means the Kingfisher will move on, the chances of the Bitterns breeding next spring are remote, the Otters will go hungry and i dare say much more of the fen wildlife will suffer.

Mitch

Oh Mitch........that's terrible news. :'(

The reserve flooded last November and made a recovery by spring so fingers crossed.

Was going to pm you about this as I feared the worst, after hearing that there was a tidal lock at Yarmouth!:shake: Trust you've avoided any flooding of your property.

Looks like I'll have to be even more patient and content myself with the kingfisher pics that you've posted.

Sorry to hear about the Fen Mitch. Have you heard if there has been any damage to the bird sites on the North Coast of Norfolk.

Thats a real b****r Mitch I hope that balance is returned in the not to distant future with minimal disruption

Cley Marshes has suffered the same fate, the sea water overtopped the defences and flooded the fresh water marshes. They've done a lot of work there recently and have a system to allow the sea water back out and reflood with fresh water continously until the salt is gone. It's still going to have damaged a lot of the flora and fauna tho:shake:

Thanks for the info Mark. One of my mates is going to Cley on Sunday I'll pass the info on to him.

Sorry it's not better news, they interviewed a bloke from the NWT centre on the radio, he didn't sound happy!

Im guessing theses are all on the east coast as there has been a tidal surge !!!

A tidal surge in the North Sea has sparked severe flood warnings and evacuations on England's east coast.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has held an emergency Cobra committee meeting and the Environment Agency has warned of "extreme danger to life and property".

Norfolk and Suffolk have eight severe flood warnings. Parts of Essex, Lincs, North Yorks and Kent are also on alert.

Norfolk Police have visited 7,500 homes in Great Yarmouth to advise residents to leave the area.

Thats the one, by all accounts we got off very lightly, if it happens next week when the spring tides are on us the coast would have been inundated and the water would have flooded the entire broads system up to Norwich.

Sad news Mitch, will keep my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.
Maddog I hope that Cley also has a speedy recovery.

I am just glad that it was not so much worse for all

:( Sad news indeed. We were going to go to Strumpshaw Fen tomorrow. Poor animals and birds :(

I'm just glad it wasn't in a couple more weeks as all the baby seals would have copped it along the coast!

What bothers me is that I didn't see 1 warning anywhere until the night! We would never have planned to go away had we known, it kind of spoilt things for us as I was calling the Floodline every hour from about midnight until 7am. We very nearly came home again as we would have lost our Guineas had it happened as they predicted. But my whining about a spoilt night is nothing compared to all those poor animals and birds getting washed out.

Meh....

Popped down again today and was told it was worse than last year, the water level is still high but the top of the Kingfishers fav perch is now visible, 2 of the 3 hides are inaccessible as are about 50% of the trails, they've been picking up dead fish and frogs along the waters edge not good news for the KF or the Bittern.

Maybe we ought to have a TP meet next year when things have recovered Jo

I think you're right Mitch. Sounds like a plan

I'll take a look at Cley and Titchwell this week if I get a chance and let you know what it's like up here. It's a bit more of a trek for you, but we could make a day of it if you like:thumbs:

Cheers Mark
