Hi, I am flying to Venice next month with my family and want to take my DSLR and a couple of lenses along with my Macbook Pro 14".
Unfortunately, my daughter has booked flights with Ryanair

and they have informed me that the maximum size for a carry-on bag is 40x20x25cm. If I want to take anything larger I will have to pay an extra £42 (!!!) to use an overhead locker. The gear I would like to take is:
-Nikon D750
-Nikon 24-70mm f2.8
-Nikon 35mm F1.8 (optional, could leave behind if necessary)
-Nikon 85mm F1.8 (optional, could leave behind if necessary)
-Macbook Pro 14"
-Spare batteries, external SSD & chargers (these could go in my hold luggage if required)
Can anyone suggest a bag which would be suitable? I'm struggling a bit at the moment.

The best suggestion would be to change the flight. I wouldn't fly with them for all the tea in China. I did once as it was beyond my control, but never again. :runaway:

If you can't do this, then I can only wish you good luck and recommend you get good insurance . . .

Note that camera batteries MUST go in carry on, they are not permitted to be in hold luggage.
Chargers, cables, etc are fine in hold luggage.
You probably have a weight limit as well as a size limit - worth checking on this - returning from Australia a couple of years ago we had to spend 15 minutes carefully swapping things about between our carry on bags after check in staff announced they would be strictly enforcing the 7 kg limit, and weighing every carry on bag - our 4 bags weighed under 28 kg, but 10 kg of that was in my bag with camera, lenses, tablet, books, etc!

Flown with them 25 times or sop in last 3 years - not a problem at all! Just read the rules and ensure your bag is the right size and it's never an issue. No frills service but how else could I fly to Cyprus last month cheaper than a train from Cambridge to London!!!

Do you need to take the MacBook. If not I have https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lowepro-Ta...sprefix=ryanair+camera+bag,aps,87&sr=1-1&th=1 which is excellent. Will store all your gear and space for book, passport, etc...

If you do need to take laptop then I have this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lekespring...3690&sprefix=ryanair+cabin+bag,aps,84&sr=8-15 but its NOT a camera bag

If you’re travelling with family can you split the kit and get others to carry something in their carry ons ?

Unfortunately, that's not an option. I hate using Ryanair swore I'd never fly with them again some time ago but the trip is for my daughter's 30th Birthday and she has made all of the arrangements and bookings.

Hmm, that may be an option!

It is frankly just better to drive these days. Other airlines are also now taking a p*** just as bad as ryanair. The whole airport and getting to airport experience puts me off from flying entirely

A bit of a drive. Also, I hear the roads are a bit of a nightmare in Venice ;)

Last few trips I have been using a Lowepro Sling, lots of room for all the camera gear you mention, will lay flat in the security tray and you just open the flap and leave stuff in situ rather than having to dig everything out for them. Going very cheap now as old technology. :)

I got in 2 cameras 80-400, 15-30, 105 macro and 35 and 50 plus all anciliary chargers and stuff. Weighed in at 9 kilo when loaded.:) Ryan air do not check the weight of hand luggage which is an absolute boon for photographers.

Again, no issues for me, last 2 flights back from Koln, I was back at home 2 hours after leaving the runway in Koln!!

Wow. Nearly 3hrs from flipping Luton airport alone

This is a dangerous statement.

Airlines and airports and staff are variable - sometimes day to day.

Most of the time I fly my cabin baggage size and weight are not checked by any airline.

But not all the time.

Actual enforcement limits may vary as well - so an airline might state X kg but actually pass a higher amount without a problem. Trouble is that on the way back you might find the enforcement is X kg. Same with sizes.

Yes, and also "in my experience" they also do not check that the ticket you have covers the small "hand luggage" suitcase that you can carry with the hand luggage. People are just herded around like animals, there isn't time to check everything is in order only that you have a "priority boarding ticket" if in that que.
The Ryan air staff are friendly and helpful, just so so busy and rushed off their feet.

Disclaimer, of course our traveling party is always one of those that takes along the kitchen sink with two maximum limit hold bags, two maximum limit on board cases and two hand luggage bags for sandwiches and crisps, invariably this doubles the price of the flight and have often wondered to myself if it would be more cost effective to paint a big smiley face on the case, add a blond wig and pay for it a seat.

As an aside, it may be worth traveling in a Barbour wax jacket, the "Northumberland" has enormous game pockets and I am sure that I could do a week with camera gear from items just carried in the jacket pockets.

You might find a usb charger is a lot smaller and lighter than a standard Nikon one. The camera will be easier to pack if it does not have a lens on it.

Personally I'd spring for the £42, it's a fraction of the cost of your gear and about what you'll pay for a coffee in St Mark's Square.
I agree, well worth a few quid extra to avoid all the hassle.
Also as stated above, no batteries allowed in hold luggage.

No need to be this dramatic.

Just put the bag on the floor in front of your seat and you’re good.

Flew Ryanair more than anyone for cheap flights and had no issues.

I've had my hand baggage weighed. The helpful check-in desk girl advised me to stick anything heavy in a pocket while the bag was being weighed, so I did and it got through. I always wear a fleece through airports even during Summer so have plenty of pockets available! (Useful for sticking keys, wallets, change etc. in to get through the scanning queue faster as well.)

I have considered for a while to get one of those vests with multiple pockets. As though I have not to date had an issue with my photo backpack I have no mitigation to offload into jacket though I do travel with a lightweight gillette but the pockets already have keys and phone in.

I think on my last trip the pack weighted more than usual but size wise it was within the limit of smaller size for the in country flight, compared to the slightly more generous size of the long haul leg.

Talking backpacks, I recall reading somewhere not to make it look like you are carrying a heavy weight. As at check-in they might ask to look at the pack on your back to eyeball the size and get any impression of it's weight?

I cant recall ever being weighed at the gate, only large bags when checking in. In fact I am struggling to remember when I last put bags in the stands they have... and I have done a lot of flights. I did see people having to do this last year, maybe Vienna/Berlin but only select people and in fairness they did not fit so had to remove stuff.

Your right, if your huffing and puffing they will assume its heavy, Black IMO always looks less visible than bright bags.

I tote the backpack on a single finger to make it look lighter and keep it as far out of the desk's eyeline! We fly with Tui rather than a budget airline so we have check-in bags as well as the hand baggage. Recent trips have been made with a much reduced kit - just a decent bridge and a compact (with a little GoPro as well now) so the weight shouldn't be a problem.
