Looking for some location advice if possible? I'm booked in to one of the Osprey Photography hides near Rutland Water tomorrow afternoon but plan to drive up in the morning and enjoy Rutland Water itself for a few hours beforehand. Any advice on which visitor centre is the best from which to base myself and are there any particualr hides/areas/lagoons that are more suited to some bird photography? I'm using a 150-600 on a crop body so have a reasonable amount of reach.

Cheers you wonderful lot.

Ian

In my experience it isn't particularly good for photography, you tend to be too far away most of the time. Admittedly I haven't been at this time of year, so there should be more around and more chance of getting some photos. The Anglian Centre is the one I usually go to. Do a search on Flickr to see what's been photographed recently

You can see the latest sightings here http://www.lros.org.uk/News.htm

One of the Osprey nests is on a post in the middle of the reservoir nature section (south west corner at Lyndon). It’s a bit too far off for photography though.

The main bird watching centre is at Egleton. Lots of hides looking out across various sections of the reservoir and nature reserve. I seem to remember there being a small bird feeding area at Egleton bird center.

Cheers guys. You've both kind of confirmed what i thought. I figured the chances were high that everything would be a little too far away. I'll just make sure i take my binoculars and enjoy the show instead of chasing a photo or two.

How did you get on?

Had a great day. As suspected there wasn't a lot of photo opportunity on the reserve itself so i just enjoyed watching which actually made a pleasant change. The River Gwash Ospreys hide I visited in the evening was awesome! (photos in a seperate thread in the bird forum)

I was there in the hide on the reserve Wednesday for a few hours. Was just about to go and they started to move about. Got some pictures of them as it was the closet I've seen them in a while.
Yeah found your thread later on After I posted that. Cracking pictures
I always thought about the gwash hide but the times they offer just don't suit unfortunately.
Got a new crop body coming this week so I may go over next week to see if it's any better than a ff body.
