Evening,

Just had to remove some files from light room as i am running out of storage space on MacBook.

Just wondering, these photos are all raw and have been edited but not accessed for ages so have removed them to back up drive, do i presume that even thought the catalogue is backed up, should I reimported these photos they will not have any edits applied ?

Thanks

Provided Lightroom knows they have been put on the external drive, it will still link the edits to them . It depends on how you moved the images as to the best way to proceed. If it's a group of images, say everything you shot in 2008, and they are still in the same order, you simply need to tell Lightroom that they are on the external drive. In the library pane if you right click on the folder ( in this case 2008) and select the option to "Update Folder Location" select the new location and Lightroom will update it's database with the new location.

All the edits will be intact. It's a system that I use. I store all my images on external drives, then once they start not to be used frequently I simply disconnect the drive and store it safely. The previews are still available so I can still search for images. If I need one that's on a stored drive I simply reconnect it. Saves a bit of space on the desk and keeps it tidy ( well a little bit)

To be able to separate your edited photos from their current catalogue you need to set LR to create xmp files. These store all the edit data.

You will then need to keep the photo with its xmp file - taking in to account any need to rename the photo and the xmp at the same time as necessary.

Of course, you can avoid all this trauma including not worrying about your LR catalogue being destoyed, by converting your RAWs in to DNGs.

decided to upgrade the hdd so i am not gonna run into this problem for a while longer, fingers crossed
