Shot my first rugby this afternoon as no football. Bit of a strange experience, although enjoyed it as the set pieces made it clear where the action was going to be.

Any basic suggestions for rugby shooting? Where do you stand? What images are you looking for? How do you cope with a mass of bodies in a scrum?

Cheers

Where do you stand?

dont stand...sit..thats the biggest bit of advice i can give you..

rugby player runs the lenght of the pitch to score...is just a pic of a man running wiht a ball..

you want tackles.. high catches and tackles.. touch downs if dramatic.. not just man places ball on floor.. more tackles ...

rain and mud helps :)

i do shoot rugby profesionally but rarely.. there are others on here who shoot it every week.. sure they will offer better advice :)

Cheers Kipax - I did remember to go low - I did try for the tackles and got a couple of good hand offs, although I found isolating the players difficult due to the number of others on the pitch.

When you look at Gary's pictures, remember that he has the advantage of shooting Rugby League, while you're probably seeing Rugby Union. League gives you about five times the opportunities for tackle pictures.

I'm too much in awe to look at too many of Gary's, just find it makes my work look cr*p

True, but he's not bad at shooting the 'lawyers' code' either! :)

Thats purely because the RU players stop, talk to each other and politely hand over the ball to their opponent before any physical contact is made, nice set of chaps really.

Dont be, seriously, im lucky in that i get to shoot in some excellent arenas, true my work got me into that position but shooting grass roots level is where i came from and sometimes where it's best.

There is some RU on my website as well as RL

No problem at all Tug.

I tend to crop to 3x2 in case anyone actually wants to buy them from the club....

I use a standard size too Robin, I used to do 3x2 but now do 4x3, I find that this gives me more latitude if they decide to have a different format (10x8 etc)... I know Gary and Tony use 7x5 ....

But for the forum, I crop to suit or as I think the papers may crop it.

Love this shot, 1 day I might get there, I hope ;)

It is a good capture, I tend to try and get this sort of shot but generally I am looking for the player with ball in hand to be the subject of the image...ie get his/her face in the shot.....saying that this capture of Robins is great as it captures the tackler really well. He has also taken the shot from a low angle which enhances it no end.

Low angle. Bought a new chair the other week, lent back on it and the damn thing just collapsed :cuckoo:

Slimmersworld here I come :bang:

Great thanks Tug I'll bear that in mind.

I'm the "unofficial" tog for a local club and they use a lot of my pictures on their website and the local rag.

Depending on what sort of game they're having I try to get on one of the corners of the pitch at the end they're attacking. Found that it helps to isolate the players and increases the chances of getting facial expressions as well as some decent try-scoring shots.

If they're not having such a good game I try and get somewhere near the halfway line and take my chances they'll be running towards me at some point

Can agree with what you're saying there, but at the same time, sometimes having no faces/half a face in the shot works.

Heres one I took on Sunday, which, although I was sat when I took it, I felt I should have been a lot lower for.

On top of the great suggestions already put forward, you can get a wide variety of shots from rugby union so look out for front row or flanker shots at scrum time, lineout action, players trapped at the bottom of a ruck placing the ball back. Don't chase the game but do change your viewpoint every so often when an opportunity presents itself. Oh and be thankful you're not shooting league, or you'd end up with 100 identical shots of the same thing, player running with ball being tackled zzzzzzzz ;) the beauty of union is the variety of shots you can get.

Rugby Union aint called Rugby Yawnion for nothing though, there is quite a lot of varied shots available though, if only they kept the ball in play.

I might make up a new rule just for you Gary. My ban trigger finger is getting itchy

Just like the game of Union itself in that you both make up the rules as you go along
