Rugby Collisions

Good afternoon all, I'm looking to pick the brains of some more experienced photographers, particularly those who have shot rugby.

I've been taking photos of my daughter's team (U16's) and have been fairly happy with the shots I've managed to get. Shooting on a D500 with a 70-200, sometimes using a TC 2.0 if I can borrow it from my mate. I've been mainly shooting from behind the try line but I'm beginning to find that lots of the images look very samey. i.e. one of the girls running towards me with the ball in her hands, sometimes with opposition players in the shot. I don't seem to get many shots of collisions, shooting from behind.

Would I be better positioning myself on a side line with a view to capturing more collisions?

No harm in mixing it up. At the lower level games I would tend to have a wander around and not stay in a fixed position. At the higher levels you are kind of told that that is your position, sit still. Don't talk during class, and to have fingers on lips.

Collision though can happen anywhere on the pitch from any angle.

So yeah, have a wander up and down the touch line. You'll get good shots of line-outs too (if they do them)

Thanks for this @Seba

I stayed on my feet today and wandered up and down the sideline and managed to get some different shots to what I do usually.

75% sit behind the try-line and let the game come to you, 25% go wandering for different angles
