My photography has grown out of my love for the mountains and outdoors in general and I've always used a 'proper' rucksack rather than a photo-rucksack for reasons of comfort, plus as a micro 4/3 photographer I generally don't need all that much gear. I've now booked myself into a week-long workshop in August where we'll be walking from hut to hut in the Dolomites and I'll need a fair bit of camera gear. I think the way to go is to use an insert case in my rucksack, maybe even something that I can take out of the rucksack which I can then leave behind in the Refugio. I've narrowed it down to three or four options and wanted to know if anyone has any recommendations re. brand. I'm looking at a Tatonka, a Neewer, a Tenba and a Yimidear. I looked at an F-Stop ICU as well, but was put off by the price. Do any of you have suggestions?

Tenba BYOB inserts. Recently got one for my 24 litre stratos hiking bag and I can see that bag becoming my favourite bag for taking the camera along whilst walking. My insert fits perfectly in the bottom of the bag and can be taken out easily if needed. I’m planning on putting anything else that’s in the main compartment in a dry bag so nothing is loose inside the bag. It should make it easier to get to the camera kit.

I like f stop bags and have a few, but F stop inserts only work well with the f stop bags. They don’t really fit other hiking bags as well.

Second recommendation here for the Tenba BYOB inserts.
I have the 9, but suspect you will need something larger for your purposes.

Before these were so commonplace I made my own version from a Lowepro Slingshot 100 bought from the classifieds for 20 quid,
Butchered it with some strong scissors and a Stanley knife just leaving the camera storage section.
Left the small front pocket attached for bits and bobs and kept the fold away waterproof cover for added weather protection when inside the rucksack.
Worked a treat as an insert in a normal rucksack and better constructed than most of the inserts available at that time.

Its still about somewhere, you are welcome to it if you think it might serve your purpose.
