Having got a new tripod for christmas, I'm wanting to get a cable release for my 40d. I never really used my cable release for my 350d, but I enjoy night photography a lot more now.

I can get the genuine Canon RS-80N3 at work for £27 new, but the query I have is:

Is it worth spending £27 on the genuine Canon shutter release, knowing 100% that I can re-sell it in the future for 66% of its value, and knowing 100% that it is going to work exactly how I expect it to?
Or will a £5 jobby from fleabay do the trick?

If you guys have some makes or some links to send me, much obliged. :)

There aren't any electronics in the RS-80N3. Just a switch, a bit of wire, and a plug that fits into your camera. So if the eBay cheapy has those components, connected up in the right order, then it will probably work just as well.

You just need to check that the remote can (a) handle shutter half-pressed, and (b) lock the shutter open for long "B" exposures - if you want those facilities, of course.

My £5 ebay job does all those, focuses, bulb exposure eveything youd want and never fails. Id get one if I were you!

aye i'll second that the ebay one's do the job just fine, I use them on both my bodies and never had a problem.

my two penneth
the fiver ebay jobbies do a grand job, and you can also strip them down and modify them if your electronocally minded, stick a mini jack plug in for example.
i have the canon wired one as well which is easier to use when doing long exposures, ie bulb mode. so get both if you can afford it

Stewart, thanks for that insight, I had no idea. It seems a silly idea to pay an extra £20 for aesthetics if they function the same.

Has anyone got any links to ebay purchases of the release?
They are so many different ones!
