I was told today that a retailer is selling Nikon D5 cameras as a loss. They sell them for £5200. However I note a couple of other retailers are selling for £4999.

So my question - does anyone know what the actual RRP is for a D5 here in the UK? And if it's £5200 or higher what are some retailers selling for £200 less. Do they want to go bust?

I suppose it depends on who told you that nugget of information? Though some online sites might mention RRP I do wonder if there is such a thing these days and afterall it is in their interests to 'infer' a big saving.

Here is a good resource for price checking and choosing who to buy from:-

HTH :)

PS The sell price can very much depend like any volume business whether a specific retailer is benefiting from volume or how much (in ££££££'s they buy from Nikon) i.e. they get deal that means though the profit may be slim they make more than the (much?) smaller business 'down the road....'

Selling at a loss? I cant see that tbh.

Grey is currently around £3900

What you mean is that illegal imports are around £3900. Legal grey market cameras would be around £3900 + VAT = £4680, which to be fair is still noticeably cheaper than mainstream UK suppliers.

Unfortunately that's semantics until the UK Government or Nikon decide to 'pull the plug'.

I’ve not been able to find the official RRP but I think it’s now £4999 but it used to be £5199.
Nikon make a fair amount of profit on their bodies so I wouldn’t worry about dealerships selling them for a few hundred less, however Nikon doesn’t take un-official price cutting lightly as they prefer dealership to stick to a certain price bracket %.
Any price reductions which Nikon doesn’t push out means the dealership takes the hit from their own margins.

As it stands the Nikon D5 is no longer the best or latest sports body out there so Nikon will adjust its price accordingly ;)

No dealer will ever sell at below the true cost. There are all sorts of hidden incentives, common practise throughout all retail, including substantial volume discounts, cash bonuses direct to the sales person, and exotic jollies for the manager. It's a long list.
