Just joined the Royal Photographic Society. Question being is it worth going for a distinction? Have others got experience of doing so?

There's quite a few threads on here on the RPS. The consensus of those who are members seems to be that the distinctions are worth going for. The consensus of those who aren't often seems to be that its a waste of time and money. Might be worth doing a search and drawing your own conclusions.

As a member, I've got a lot out of going for the distinctions, and the magazine is a decent read as well. I've got some blog posts on my website somewhere about my journey to the ARPS disnction, I'll try and post them up later.

:agree: I am going to go for my ARPS next…. it’s a great focus. The magazine has been revamped and is a good read.

Yes, its definetly with joining in my opinion, there are lots of interest groups, lectures, workshops you can attend. The monthly magazine has recently undergone a revamp and is a good read. I prefer it to most of the mainstream publications in the newsagents.

The distinctions are well worth going for, I am also in the process of putting a panel together for ARPS which I hope to submit in the next few months.

One of the main courses of failure for LRPS is repetition of similar images. Poor focus, processing or digital artefacts. This guide explains on how you can prepare for it and what the judging criteria is:-

You can submit a panel for ARPS without doing the LRPS first and there are also exemptions if you have academic or photographic qualifications.
